No sales tax on private sales in AB. This fact along with the my preference to "buy the owner"  is why I prefer private sales. The Volvo was essentially a one owner (retired school teacher)  car that saw lots of easy highway miles.  Private sales are a PITA sometimes and they require a little more groundwork. The biggest obstacle I find is that many owners have outstanding loans that are upside down against the vehicle.

I prefer privates sales as well, but we still get dinged for HST (at 13%) on private used car sales here....Absolute highway robbery. I've had cars that have changed hands 20+ times in Ontario, and each time the Government has collected their 13%.

HST includes GST correct?

Yep...It used to be PST and GST, at some point HST merged the two and things that used to incur only one or the other, suddenly got the whole 13%. Someone here probably has more context/details on it.....whenever it happened I was too young to have much skin in the game.
If I remember it correctly, once upon a time on private sales there was no taxes at all, then when GST was introduced you had to pay the GST on private sales. Then when they harmonized the 2 taxes you had to pay the HST on private sales. And I can't remember exactly when they introduced the Used Vehicle Information Package which gives you the value on the used car that you have to pay the taxes on no matter what you paid. At the end of the day it's :censor: ridiculous on how much taxes are collected on a vehicle that changes hands several times over the years.

Yeah. If you disagree with the value on the UVIP, or there is none shown (UVIP doesn't have values for vehicles older than 20 years old) you can get an appraisal and they'll tax you on that value instead. Worthwhile if you buy a project car for way less than the value on the UVIP....though getting the appraisal is an additional cost (also taxable) and hassle.

IIRC, Motorcycles, motorhomes, and vehicles with no sales history in Ontario don't have to go by the UVIP value.

Well, no.  When the NDP raised it up in 2013/14 despite a campaign promise NOT to do so, they lost the next election.  Badly.  We kicked 'em out.

The Conservatives campaigned on reversing the increase.  So far they've gone about halfway, and it's been, what 9 years?

If the NDP win the next election, they will raise the PST to 9%.  Count on it.

Well scratch me off the Subaru list:

The 2.0-liter-equipped Crosstreks will be arriving first in the spring. They'll be built in Japan like those for other markets. The 2.5-liter cars will come in the summer, and they'll be built at Subaru's factory in Lafayette, Ind.

Sounds preferable to what the Libs with their hydro debacle.  Only cost us $1 billion!!

Saw this today:

Same price with LED headlights thrown in, same size and ground clearance, looks good. Hopefully Subaru Canada follows suit with pricing and doesn't pull a Honda

Yeah, very happy I got my made-in-Japan 2023 with a manual, proper parking brake, and knobs and buttons.  :D

Also more than happy with the little 2.0 now that I’ve had a chance to wind it out. Still no rocket ship, but it is more than adequate. With a downshift to fourth, 100-120 km/h passing power is perfectly fine. It actually pulls away pretty smartly, and makes a nice growl while doing so.

Got me thinking about a post in another thread about how great the engine sounds in the new GTI…. Uh, you mean how great the fake engine noises pumped into the cabin sound in the new GTI.  ;)

I think that’s a lot of what I like about the Crosstrek: feels like a good, old-fashioned, analog car. Not many of those left.

My XC was made in Ghent Belgium.  They make a big deal about all the panels and metal bits being made in Sweden. Stamped all over the place.

I bet there is a difference between Lafayette and Japan... I have seen the movie  Gung Ho!

:D Definitely if you wanted a manual, that was the time. It's used or nothing now

Thinking the manual really helps perk up the 2.0. My Vibe had even less power, and my old Mazda truck less than that, and both were very enjoyable to drive with a manual. Going through the mountains in heavy snow with the Webers howling up on that truck is one of my favorite driving memories.

But you had use to the gears and rpm a bit like a motorcycle

I bought used. The Commies got their money in 2016. I gave money to the guy who gave money to the Commies.  ;D Also not sure who is worse; Chinese Commies or Socialist Swedes.

Can’t say for sure, but seems like that may be wrong. From Subaru’s own Canadian news release: “The Crosstrek will continue to be built at the Subaru plant in Gunma, Japan and will be available at Subaru dealerships in late spring.”

There’s a crappy, click-bait website (that I refuse to link to) now saying that the Indiana-built Crosstreks are only for the U.S. All Canadian Crosstreks will continue to be sourced from Japan. Seems unusual to me, but does jibe with what Subaru Canada said in the press release initially.
