Bella's Son wrote off his 2010 Mazda 3 on Saturday morning. Only had liability insurance on it since it was basically disposable when he got it back in June 2019. Been trying to find a replacement all week & basically getting the same car as his with maybe a little less mileage is now $5k - $7k asking with work needed! :banghead:

My oldest has his 2011 Mazda 3, again with only liability coverage on it, might get him to look into full coverage now because replacing it for what we paid 2yrs ago is :censor: impossible!

single car accident?
Yeah, off the road & into the ditch, set off side airbags as it clipped a hydro pole.

Yikes. Not hurt I hope? Young men.... ::)
No, not hurt... just his pride

Cops get him?  Or did he manage to get the vehicle out of there so no record of loss vis-a-vis the insurance company.  Otherwise devastating at that age.  Price of replacement would be the last of his issues.
Cops never showed up, he was 7km from his Dad's place. Ran home. Went back with his Dad & Stepmom to check it out. Then a buddy came by with his pickup & dragged it outta the ditch. Tow truck picked it up & took it to the scrap yard. Gave him $350 for it. Would've cost more to tow it home. Front right suspension broke, so he couldn't steer it to drag it home.

It's bleak & he's being picky now... not in any position to be like that though, no cash, still has school to finish... time to suck it up

So you and the wife picking up the tab.  :)   It's all part of the PROCESS.  Ask me how I know.  :rofl2:
We paid for the first one, which I told him he's gotta take care of to get him thru school. He's been working full-time since he dropped outta school last year. He's scheduled to go back next January. So this one is on his dime. I'll lend him some cash if he needs it, but he's gonna be paying me back on it monthly until he goes back to school.

Deals can be found with Yaris...particularly with stick.

Recently helped a friend find one. Wanted a "new" one for himself because he's giving his "old" one to his soon to be licensed son. Old one has a bazillion KM on it and still runs like a top.

And they run forever....and cost peanuts to fix.
Would be great, but they're being picky, 2010 or newer, 170k kms or less... blah, blah, blah, blah! I found the first one thanks to Oliver on here, it was his brothers car in Toronto & it was a great deal. Needed some work, but we put in the sweat equity & he beat on it for almost 4yrs

Who's paying?

If he's paying, he can be as picky as he wants.

If he's not paying, he doesn't get to pick.

That's what happens when you :censor: up your free car. You don't get rewarded.

This is a teaching moment too dude....
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

That $6K Yaris would be a rational choice given the circumstances, but I bet he would laugh at you if you dare to show it to him.... and I don't blame him 😁

Very pleased to here that.  Otherwise a small disaster.

He's been working full-time since he dropped outta school last year. He's scheduled to go back next January.

I see.  He has an income.  Thought he didn't.  Very good.  I bought my son an early 1992 Talon AWD for $3600 when he was 16.  He helped quite a bit on the house framing and roofing.  Next bill was $8500 to settle a consumer proposal when he was 18.  He paid me back each month.  No fuss.

Jesus, he racked up enough debt in less than a year that he went through a proposal at 18?!?!?!  AND you helped bail him out of it?

I thought you were all about tough love?  I guess not, eh?  The sky's only falling when it's some other family, not your own.

The son knows how to spend I give him that.  :rofl2:  Take a look my DIY thread.

The Proposal was very clean.   Two banks sent him one CC each and he ran those up pretty fast to $18K and then stopped, but the interest was 24% and finally when they were notified by the Trustee the tab was $22K.

In my opinion, the Banks should have got stiffed for the full amount.  Sending a kid who washed cars for a living two CCs.  ::)   I wasn't the least bit annoyed.  He took two trips; one to France et al with his GF and man is that the time to do it.

Just prior to the Proposal we sold his Tacoma and bought a 20 year old little Bimmer for $3K.   Sold it 2 years later for more after we covered all the rust up.  At that time one's vehicle could not exceed $4K in value vis-a-vis the Consumer Proposal.

I was quite pleased with the whole affair.  He stuck with cash only for years after and paid me back right away.
The Proposal is on one's consumer record for 3 years after final payment.  Consequently, you've got to act quickly.

It's not the banks fault the kid lacked discipline....

And looking at dealer auction price results there’s only been one 2018 Yaris sold in the $15k range and it had over 100,000 km MORE Km than the $30k sample. Goes to show how accurate VMR is lol.

2018 Yaris average selling price is $18,000. Highest sold I could find was just under $22k and it had 39,000km.

Honestly doesn’t look far off any auction I’ve seen in any market strong or weak. If bids and no sales have always been a big part of auctions. If the conversation rate is anywhere near 35-40% that’s considered a excellent sale. The big dealer auctions here in Canada run on average 38% conversion (that’s  the percentage sold)

Are there more accurate sites available to the public?

It actually used to be fairly accurate. Just the past few years with the lunacy in the market sites like VMR can’t keep up. They do seem to be more accurate on truck values. Don’t know of any consumer sites other than VMR.
