I think some people should starting thinking about investing in a Haynes manual, some tools and a RockAuto account :rofl2: Keep what you've got and make it work.

That might work for a ten year old car. Once they get to a certain age you can't get parts anymore even if the vehicle is in good shape overall.
I'm running into that with my truck.

On the Pontiac I was like, well, I've hardly put any money into it so far, do I want to start on an almost 20 year old car?

With my Mazda pickup I did because I had no choice, but it ended up getting more parts in the last 20,000 km of its life than I put in the previous 380,000!

That 's my dilemma. I have replaced a lot of parts over the time I have owned it . So I know what I have. To go out and by another slightly newer over priced one doesn't make sense to me. I would be starting all over again.

My son’s Rio is sold. With the accommodation sale he will save taxes as well on the $8900. So it’s like a direct sale of $10,300. or so.

At first I was hoping for $4500!   :rofl2:

Did he get his Bolt ?

Not yet, but it's on the train to Montreal. Should get it mid April at worst. The buyer knows and is ok with that. He gave him a $500 deposit. We'll do an oil change in the meantime.

Another way to look at these inflated used prices is that you are getting and older car with potentially more mileage than 2 years ago for the same money or a bit more....

I've been keeping an eye on used market for 2011-2017 X3s since late 2020 thinking I will buy one to replace the Outlander but wasn't sure which way to go - 2012 with last N52, 2016 diesel or 2017 35i so I was looking at all options.

In summer of 2021 I was almost decided to pull the trigger on a 2017 X3 35i CPO w/Enhanced pack, exactly the color combo I wanted, with about 70K km, for around $30K, possibly a bit over IIRC....  I hesitate for a while and then changed my mind and decided to put the purchase aside as it was not really needed....

Today, I'm following this unit on Autotrader, nearly identical, but with half the mileage and 2 years older now, for $33K asking. So the price is in the same ballpark today, give or take, as it was back in summer 2021 and of course not CPO warranty....

This specific trim new was $60K MSRP before fright/PDI, discounts, fees, etc.....

Knowing what the prices were before, I'm trying to figure out what I would be willing to pay for this very specific car, assuming good condition and taking into account the new realities of course ... What I came up with so far is $29-$30K max for a car with under 100K...

For this particular unit currently for sale on Autotrader, with 32K km, one owner, some service records, no accidents, BC car for half of its life, I would probably pay the max $30K.... Am I out to lunch?

There is a massive scarcity of cars under $10k.  Anything priced under that is attractive as basic transportation.

What was $5k a few years ago (clapped out Corollas/Civics/Matrixes, 10 year old Kias, etc) are now $10k.

Best described as a nightmare for people of all age looking for a ride to get to work.

It's supply push deflation in wages and cost push inflation in prices, a perfect storm!! Wage deflation because regular and irregular immigration has increased population by about ~1 million in the last year alone, so no shortage of labor which keeps wages low and cost push inflation on the supply/production side so buyers in the middle of this are squeezed. Three  decades ago a maximum of 48 month financing was the norm which over the years went to 60 month, then 72 months, 84 months and now 96 months. I am waiting for the first brave finance vendor or car manufacturer to offer 108 month financing!! All to provide the illusion of affordability!!

Great post.

You never know.  Travel trailers are commonly financed at 240 month terms and have been for some time.

Easy $15K in southern Ontario.  Assuming it's in primo condition which I'm sure it is.

I’ve spent the entire day on three different auction platforms trying to buy a small car under $10k.

So….anyone here want to sell theirs? Bubba??? [emoji38]

I wouldn't sell the Corolla for less than $10k even if I was a meth addict.

So in the end I’m possibly an owner of a 2013 Volt and a really nice 2008 Yaris. Both well above my comfort level $$$ at a wholesale dealer level. But around here good cars for under $10k are virtually non existent. $2500 is the new $500 beater, and $10,000 is the new $3-5,000 ‘decent’ car.
