If someone told me 20 years ago there would be a $80k Civic brand new I would think they were insane. Now look where we are.

The $80K CTR doesn't even bother me but the 1 and 2 year old Crosstreks going for more than new really do.

That is the oddest thing. Middle of the pandemic we got our lightly used RX for basically half price, but when it came time to get the Crosstrek buying used made no sense whatsoever

I would agree with that.  The rational side of me says this is just economic theory put to the test, but I don't think it's quite so simple.

You want to pay $80k for a Type R, you do you buddy.  It's a free country.  I would think in this situation there are no lower/middle income, working families with a strict budget being ripped off.  This is an eyes-wide-open scenario.

Playing games with basic transportation, IMO the manufacturers should just increase MSRP to fairly compensate the dealer for their service rather than there existing this vast grey area where who the hell knows what to pay for a car anymore.

I think the events of the last few years have re-educated the manufactures on how supply and demand works, and they've come to realize just how effective controlling/limiting supply can be at driving profits. The high-end stuff has been onto this for a long time, which is why many high-end exotics and whatnot are produced in very limited quantities. Now though, manufactures have learnt how restricted supply (or the illusion of) can be beneficial to profit and we will see them continue to work that to their advantage.

I think that works (in the more average vehicle category anyway) only as long as everyone is short of supply

Once competitive models are out in quantity it all falls apart

Which is good, yay capitalism!

I think it depends how you play it. Yes, it's easiest when everyone is in short supply, but the idea of a supply shortage on a particular offering can help to create demand. People are followers, that's just how it is, so if 'CUV A' is sold out with a long wait list, people will automatically think it must be superior in some way to the competitors, hence the fact that others are willing to wait for it. So demand is increased for it.

It also gives makes that don't always get considered a real shot

I'd never considered a Subaru before, been very happy with our Toyota and Honda based vehicles. But with either huge wait times (Toyota) or huge price increases (Honda) it was time to look around

As I've said before - I feel VERY glad that I'm not in the market for a car right now.  Who the hell knows, indeed.

Except those are base models, on a 15 year old truck platform.

That's why you also have the option of spending on $20k more on a non base, newer platform model.

the blue one is a bit more than base model.  It has the bigger  screen in the instrument cluster, the bigger screen consode, heated seats and steering wheel, remote start, back up sensor, upgraded cloth seats and the HEMI.  But all these would be probably included on a base model  Tundra.  The Ram base are more for fleet(tradesman) trucks and has none of the options I mentioned. They are very basic which i don't think they are worth it in 2023.   The blue one looks like a descent deal.

but yeah, old platform... probably the only thing on the lot that can use the word...."reliable"  :P

Edit:

in comparison, the cheapest new F150(crew cab) in Alberta is listed just below $57k, $56k for crew cab Tundra, $54K for the Sierra 1500 and there's a bid Boy Ridgeline for $51K.. ;D

Usede car market doesn't seem to be correcting much. My daughter in Vancouver is still shopping. Most recently she was looking at a low mileage 2015 BMW that was asking about 60% of it's 2015 MSRP.  ::)

^^ yeah I don't think anything will change until there is a supply of in demand vehicles. There are no deals especially for us cash buyers. I gave up last week.

That being said, it was a pretty advanced truck design when it came out. My work truck was the previous gen, and that was more of a traditional dinosaur. Even then, it did all the truck things I needed to do

Rear coils, heated wheel/seats, backup cam/sensors, all luxury  :)
