I think the new Pathfinder deserved a spot here.

Highlander -- thank goodness a Grand Highlander is coming.

Forget that noise, find a decent GMT800 series Suburban/Yukon XL/Escalade and laugh all the way to the bank.

Lighten up Francis.....

I'm with you but need to head to the BC or the US desert to find one not getting devoured by the tin worm.

It is insane how many GMT800s are on the roads in the southern states....If you remove the rust factor they just don't die.

A bit of paint work or a wrap is way easier to contend with rather than rust, no thanks.

Just POR15 the frame every few years.  ;D

Not everyone wants to deal with constant maintenance of older vehicles though. Suspension components, steering components, exhaust systems, failed electronics, etc. To some people, $1,000 a month to make sure their vehicle doesn't strand their family on the QE2 when it's -30 out is worth it.

I would by way more concerned about some dollar store Kia leaving me on the side of the road over a GMT800, rusty frame and all  ;D

You bring up a good point although a well maintained older vehicle probably has a similar record to something new. We have also lost a lot of common sense. My parents were both prairie kids. If the weather was -30 and roads were bad my father would simply delay the trip. Himself? fine. Exposing family to that type of danger/situation? Not worth it.

New Tahoe's list at $70,000 to $90,000, ouch!

That's gotta sting at 6%

You have to work really hard to break a GMT800 to the point where it'll strand you....really hard. Aside from the shocks, which I did as a preventative maintenance thing, all the suspension and steering components on mine are stock, with 272K on them. Still tight, I check all the bushings and joints every oil change. Factory exhaust is still perfect too. It's just one of those vehicles that is built to survive the apocalypse.

I'd trust my family in a decently maintained 20 year old GMT800 with 300K on it over the average 3 year old CUV any time.

Really?  My CX-5 is an average 3 year old CUV and it is perfectly fine.

What, do you think all CUV"s just turn to junk after three years?  Maybe if all you're used to is an Equinox...

I didn't say it wasn't fine. I just said I'd trust an old GMT800 over it.....That's not a bad thing, GMT800s are damn good. For the record I'd have no problem putting my family in a 3-year old CX-5....I just prefer the trusty Slade. 7 years now and it's never left us stranded, never failed to start, never even thrown an error code.

Plus with the Slade you can fit three kids, luggage, dog and pull a trailer. The CX-5 is fine if you are shuttling the family across town to Grandmas for dinner.

$90k seems low on the high side.

True. I have been looking to sell the Explorer for something bigger as I fear it's not going to be big enough for us. The more I read about the Expedition the more it scares me so maybe GMT800 it is if I can find something in really good condition.

You mean driving through a bad blizzard isn't a prairies right of passage? I did postpone a work trip back in November because of the carnage happening in the Red Deer area. A couple of days later the trip down was probably one of the lovelier drives I had.
