Too cute! Looks like Firm Jr will have to learn how to replace a wiper blade - baby steps!

Lol, no kidding. He's actually been begging me, daily, to polish it and 'fix the rust'. I keep telling him that it needs to be much warmer out before any of that will work, but you know...kids. I have like 2 weeks off around Christmas, if the roads are good I might just run it up to my buddy's shop and spend a couple days on it with the kid.

One day you'll have your own 40 x 60 heated garage.  I have a 26 x 48 but it's not practical to heat it.  The cost of the spray foam would be ridiculous for what I use it for.  But the son is hell bent on a 40x 60.  His buddy can build it now for $120K plus interior, but land use obstacles remain for now.

Wood stove.

A few problems with that.  I don't live there in the winter and I only use it for storage.  My mustang gets a heated space at the primary house.  Daily drivers stay outdoors.  Remote starters fix that problem for me.

My Insurance company will not insure structures heated by wood stoves were vehicles, boats, anything with gasoline stored in them, are kept.  Consequently, the vehicles inside are not insured as well.

Besides I figure the spray foam would be $40K and then I'd need to cover all that with a flame retardant so another $20K.  I'd also need to install an air exchanger.

The only good way to do it is run the pex pipes in the floor when the slab is poured and then heat 24/7 with a propane condensing boiler.  The building went up before all that was available so I'm SOL on heat which I don't care about.

Currently my Yamaha wake boat is crammed into one bay of my son's garage which is heated.  It has 3 ballast tanks and the 2 motors hold water.  Mega PIA to winterize for freezing storage.  I'll take a pic of that and post it.  Did not go in easy, but quite lucky it did.  But can't keep doing that year after year.  Son needs an additional building.

Every Canadian that has enough property needs a heated garage/shop in this horrible climate.  Should be enshrined in the Charter because there is a growing mob of Marxists/Socialist/Climate nut balls that think it's an extravagance; a waste of fossil fuels.  You know their story; if they can't get what you have, then you can't have it either.   :P

Holidays and unseasonably warm weather gave the boy and I the opportunity to make some progress on this.

Starting with the exterior lighting as most of it wasn't working at all, or was working weirdly. Turns out those ugly fog lamps the PO installed in the upper grille were wired them into the factory parking light circuit - which at 20A wasn't built to run two big high-intensity fogs, plus the rest of the system. So it was popping fuses, and his 'fix' was to attempt to power some of the other lamps off of other circuits (and MGB only has 4 primary circuits, and 2 secondary). Disconnecting the fogs (which I intended to junk anyway) solved the fuse popping issue, then it was just a matter of figuring out how everything was suppose to be wired. Fortunately, I have the 77+ MGB tail lamp wiring diagram burned into my memory, so only took maybe an hour to sort everything.

The only lighting not working now is the turn signals, but the hazards work fine, so I suspect it's an issue with the turn signal switch itself - or the wiring associate with it. Problem for another day...

Since the weather was cooperating we started pulling off wheels, sanding them down, and repainting them the correct silver & black two-tone. I've done the MGB 'Rostyle' wheels a few times before and I've had the most success just spraying the whole rim silver, and then hand-painting the black sections with a soft brush. I use Tremclad which holds up well, doesn't require primer, and has excellent self-leveling properties, which is great if you're brushing it on.

Trim rings that came with the car were mis-matched, so I dug through my stash and was able to put together a complete set of 'chrome' finished units - as oppose to the factory aluminum.

With the wheels off I got a chance to do a proper inspection under the car and things look pretty good....aside from the rocker rust, which I knew about, the rest of the car is really solid; wheel wells, cross members, etc. Front suspension checks out OK, and someone has clearly replaced all of the rubber brake and clutch hydraulic hoses very recently, which saves me a lot of work.

Also pulled the 3 wiper arms off, painted them, and had Firm Jr install new blades - just for BP  :D

Doubt we'll get many more suitable days to do much more work on it till the Spring, but at least we got a couple big jobs knocked down.

Couple before and after shots of the rims.....Ignore the tires, they're mismatched junk, I've got a new set on order.....Nice thing about tiny little 14" units, is that tires are super cheap.

A night and day difference! Those are chrome plastic snap-on's right?

Thanks Guys!

A night and day difference! Those are chrome plastic snap-on's right?

They're actually metal, some type of pressed steel, chrome plated. Though I believe the ones you typically see at the AutoParts stores now are chrome plastic - yuk.
The originals were polished aluminum, but they're pretty hard to come by in good shape as curbs mangle them pretty good.

Very cool. People see anything in chrome nowadays and assume it's plastic. Vintage-correct rings have got to add extra satisfaction points with the project.

We had an unusually warm day today, 8C, sunny and dead calm, and on a Sunday! So, I decided to tackle some of the paint restoration. I started with the hood, which buffed up really well using a DA my usual compounds and polishes. However, the front fenders are fiberglass (aftermarket replacements), and the paint on them was pretty badly crazed, to a point where you could feel the texture in it with your hand - I've seen this sort of thing before on fiberglass, so I guess it has something to do with the aging process of paint on fiberglass. No amount of buffing was going do anything about that.

So, I started experimenting with one area, found something that worked, and then did the whole fender. Essentially, I cut down the worst of the crazing with 600 grit wetsand. Then, I masked the fender and sprayed two coat of Automotive Clear from an over the counter rattle can. Since it was from an aerosol it went on a little orange peely and uneven, but I just wanted to build up a good coat on it. Waited for that to dry (shockingly fast) and then cut that down with a 1500 grit wet sand to remove the orange peel. Then I buffed that out with some finishing compound and was absolutely shocked at how well it came out.

The idea was that the clear coat would fill the crazing 'cracks' and then when I wet sanded it, it evens everything out like glass. I figured it would come out 'ok', but it's way better than OK, almost looks like new paint. Took about 3 hours to do one fender, fortunately though only the front fenders were crazed, so I got one more to do, rest of the car should polish out fine with just the usual process.

Here's a shot of the paint on the fender before I started messing with it - fried, and trying to polish it just gets polish stuck in the crazing.

Close up of the finished fender

Here you can see the difference between the untouched passenger fender, and the hood / driver's fender

Love this transformation sort of stuff - probably my favorite part about working on old cars.

While I was waiting for the paint to dry I took all the sketchy wiring for those ugly grille foglamps out, and got the one speakers that was dead working again.

Thanks. It's Brooklands Green, same color I had on the Spitfire I did years ago - I even have leftover paint on hand for touch ups, saved me $60  ;D. Pretty popular Leyland color, back when I was still living at home my dad and I had a TR6 also in Brooklands, and even before that I remember him having a Brooklands MGB, nearly identical to this one but with tan interior.
