Firm Jr's MGB Project
« on: December 05, 2022, 06:43:30 pm »
I've been actively avoiding new project cars for a few months, have a few things going in and really prefer to have my focus there right now, but after a couple of weekends in the house with miserable weather I figured one little project couldn't hurt too much. Firm Jr is now 4.5, right around the age I got my first MGB, and he's really taking an interest in cars - and wrenching on them. So, I figured this is something we can wrench on together over the winter/spring and I'll let him really learn the ropes on it. He came with me today to get it and he has been super excited about it for days....So when we got there, even though the car was a little rougher than I expected, I couldn't disappoint him, so we bought it anyway.

It's a 78 MGB, basically the same car as my blue one, only this one is Brooklands green - and green happens to be the kid's favorite color. Original owner (probably the biggest selling feature for me) passed away in 2017 and the car was caught up in estate dealing until now, it finally landed with his son who put it up for sale and we grabbed it.

It's a decent car, clearly was loved by the original owner, but fell into disrepair more recently as he became less able to care for it. Seats and interior were redone at some point, not the correct pattern on the seats or door panels, but it's all in good shape, so I'll probably leave it alone. Floors are perfect, hardtop is a nice feature to have, softtop looks good (though hard to tell with it folded down), engine bay is very original and tidy. Paint should shine up OK. The worse part is the dog leg area infront of the rear wheels, typical rot in there...Easy enough to patch up, but I wasn't really expecting it given that the rest of the car is so solid.

Bought it as a non-runner, the seller said it hadn't been run since 2017, but he believed it was 'running when parked'. Got it home, and since I didn't want to push it into position in the driveway, Firm Jr and I dug into getting it started. Fresh battery got it turning over, but no fuel. Gave the fuel pump the ole Tonya Harding treatment and that brought it around. Dumped in some fresh gas, and it started instantly! Even idled well! Gotta love an easy fix!

It looks like the brake and clutch hydraulics were done prior to parking it because the brake and clutch master cylinders, clutch slave, and rubber lines all look brand new - another score as all the hydraulics work great - highly unusual in an MG that's been sitting. So, we span it around the block a few times, and it drives well, no bouncing around, no clunking, banging, etc. Shifts through the gears well, and the engine pulls strong.

Mechanically it seems like it's going to be mostly electrics here; no turn signs or hazards, few corner markers are out, no sound from the radio, and the cooling fan runs on high constantly. Someone also added some el cheapo fog lamps that need to disappear as well.

We pulled a bunch of trash, tools, parts, etc out of it to go through another day, vacuumed the cabin and trunk and called it a day. So, now I've got another tired looking hulk in the driveway and a bunch more work to do. It's ok though; Firm Jr looked at me when we got back in the house and said "it was a good day daddy"...and he's right, it was a damn good day.  :)

I HATE when people paint these factory rostyle wheels all silver, so that'll be addressed asap.

Great choice of a car for Jr to learn the ropes. Around what age will you be teaching him to drive it?

Thanks Guys, I grew up doing this same stuff with my dad, and it gave me a skillset that has served me very well; beyond just fixing junky cars, the problem solving, systematic approach to a project, persistence, hard work, dealing with disappoint, celebrating small victories, etc. All great character building skills.

Also, glad someone got the VGG reference, right away too! I really don't watch TV, especially 'regular' TV, no interest, but maybe a year and a half ago someone put me onto Vice Grip because he did a revival trip with an 84 2.8L Camaro like mine. Died of laughter watching it and I've been a fan since...I usually don't bother watching all the content, but I watch every revival episode. In about 3 years he's gone from working out of a double garage to the massive shop he has now, tons of sponsorships, deal with motortrend, etc...but the guy remains true to his form, and incorporates his family into everything he does. He's also an extremely knowledgeable and talented backyard mechanic, and one can learn a lot watching him.

Very nice. Love the colour. Looks like some nice simple fixes to sort this one. The only thing is now a fella is a little sad that a preschooler has a nicer going to town rig than him! :)

 Well said  ;D

Color is Brooklands green - another selling feature because I already have a quart of paint on my shelf. $100 saved  ;D My Spitfire was Brookland's green (hence the paint on hand), and one of the first cars I had as a 'flip', before I even had a license, was a Brooklands green MGB (nearly identical to this one, but with a tan interior).

Looks rust free more or less.  Where are you keeping it this winter and where did you acquire it?

Yeah, like I said, just the dog leg area in front of the rear wheels on both side. Easy enough to fix. The rest of it is really solid, probably the cleanest floors I've seen in a B in a long time.  I got it in Whitby, from the son, but it was last registered in Newcastle and sounds like it spent all of it's life in the Oshawa/Bowmanville/Newcastle area.

As for parking, where it is in the photos, across the front of my driveway, is were it'll be at least until after the Holidays. Hopefully the weather holds and we can tinker with it over the vacation, after that I'll probably move it to my buddy's barn where some of my other cars are. He has a nice heated shop on the property too, I might try to talk him into letting me use it to do some of the bodywork ahead of the spring weather.

One day you'll have your own 40 x 60 heated garage.  I have a 26 x 48 but it's not practical to heat it.  The cost of the spray foam would be ridiculous for what I use it for.  But the son is hell bent on a 40x 60.  His buddy can build it now for $120K plus interior, but land use obstacles remain for now.

Some things played in my favor, Covid/WFH being one of them, and setup a couple different scenarios for some big changes in the Firm family lifestyle. I just need to let one possible scenario fully play out before I can pull the trigger, so we're in a bit of a 'hurry up and wait' situation.

Was unusually warm yesterday afternoon at around 10C, so got the kiddo setup and sent him outside to wash the B.

Just a wash made a big difference, it was pretty grimmy. Yes, the mirrors are wrong, I think I've got a couple of the correct ones floating around to swap on.
