As with any recreational vehicle (bikes, atvs, sleds, boats) a lot of people don't realize or consider the cost of related items that go along with getting into these vehicles.  These can include trailers, storage, gear, accessories.  All these items increase the costs significantly.  Just a loading ramp to get your atv into the back of your pickup is generally over $300, unless you get them on sale.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

A buddy of mine into mountain sledding was recounting that. Sure the sled was expensive, but then he got a bigger trailer for the haul to mountains, then he needed a bigger truck to haul the bigger trailer....

Sort of like how horses go for some

Sledding is just underneath boating on the toy money pit chart.  ;D

Holy crap, really?!!?! I have a lot of friends that are into sledding and they are trying to get me into it. That would involve a sled and a trailer, but honestly, I just hate being out in the cold. Plus the whole having to drive to get to the good sledding sites, no thanks.
Lighten up Francis.....

Then the new sled every couple of years either to

a) keep up with your buddies

b) replace the one you just blew up the engine in

Maybe trail running like they do in Manitoba is cheap, but the McBride/Valemont/Sicamous stuff people get into here sure seems to get pricy quick

Yes, prairie riding is cheaper than mountain as you can get away with a lot less sled but your points A and B still apply.

Exactly.  Cheap helmet and goggles if you go that route is $350.  Can easily hit a thousand dollars for those items.  A monosuit is $1000+.  Even a jacket/bib overalls are pushing 1k for the average stuff.  Add in boots, gloves, etc.  Oh, and then insurance, registration. Repairs, because you know a sled will require them.  List just goes on and on.  I'm going to rough it this year with a basic jacket, pants, and boots that I already own, and go from there.

I loved sledding.

Primarily lake and groomed trail riding (no mountains here!!).

I've been to Houghton Lake and Hay Days....which all the manufacturers attend and is the rough equivalent to the Auto Show but for sleds.  The cool part is the manufacturers would run their new sleds and see who's was fastest.

Incredibly fun times!!

I've been to the mountains sledding once.  For this flatlander it was an eye opening and butt puckering experience.  I rode with mostly andrenaline junky experienced riders, who were constantly pushing to go further, climb higher.  Won't do that again.  Next time if it happens will be with a guide that tailors the ride to my inexperience.

I ALWAYS wear chest armor when sledding.

Huh, I don’t think I have ever seen anyone wear that.  But the last time I drove a snowmobile it was the early 90’s on a Arctic Cat Jag from the 80’s.  Back when sleds didn’t go 150mph.

Chest injury one of the top fatality on sleds, ATVs, dirtbikes, etc  So I wear a full chest/back Level 2 reactive armor

I wear one of these...

Spendy and hot. but not a concern for a sled I suppose.

This is the new cats ass and surprisingly the $$ is not too bad.

I use it in the summer. too...don't find it particularly hot. YMMV.  Though the newer ones are definitely cooler.

If I was buying new, it would be one of these:
