Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

While it looks much better than the outgoing model, to me the biggest news is how much faster it has become. The PHEV version (220 hp) is reported to spring to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds, so about 6.5 sec to 60 then. And the 2.0L "common" hybrid will probably be in the low 7 seconds. There is available (?) AWD and a double wish bone rear suspension. In other words, this may actually be a grown up and enjoyable car to drive.
P.s. I'm guessing the high rear seat might have something to do with a large PHEV battery.
P.s. various sources report availability of a 1.8L engine as well, so it looks like they want to keep the starting MSRP relatively low for the segment.

It was already an enjoyable and grown up car to drive being that's it's already on the TNGA platform.

I drove the current hybrid corolla and I wouldn't call it that, despite the platform. Slow and buzzy engine, uncomfortable seats, disconnected steering, road noise and so on. My intention was to buy it but there were just too many negatives to ignore. Powaaahhh! will rectify most of those things  ;)

Odd. Wasn't my experience at all.

Neither was that the experience of Quad.

I understand how seats might not fit you and whatnot. And the hybrid engines have never been buttery.  But that's not a problem with the actual platform.

TNGA platform is very, very good.

Huge missed opportunity to upgrade the Prius brand.

Yea...to be part of a 5.5% market share where most everyone is losing money.    :rofl2:  Where foreign EV vehicles are excluded from new EV rebates.  Where the domestics aren't projected to turn a profit until (maybe) 2025 on their EVs. Where Toyota's latest quarterly profits were ~$3 billion...and Ford's losses were near $1 billion.  Where by selling an EV you exclude non-home owners.  Where there is next to nill for charging infrastructure.  I'm sure Toyota is beside themselves.    :rofl2:

The Prime was already in the top 3 for most fuel efficient (eMPG) on the market.  And this one might be better yet.  All without the need for a full EV.

I think Toyota knows exactly what they're doing.
It’s just sad to not have an EV version, really shows how poorly Toyota is doing with EV powertrain - the market will reject it, fairly certain…BUT there is for sure one huge advantage, cab drivers across Canada will now drive in style [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Approved but….no electric version at all?!?!

I think the real issue here is….the Japanese don’t have anything to offer that is fully electric because they are years behind the competition.

Sure they do. Mazda MX30 is fully electric.

I disagree.  I think the opposite is true.

I shows how Toyota understands the market...and broadly speaking, EV aren't ready for primetime.

Not from a mass transit stance (cost, infrastructure), nor from a business/profit standpoint.

EVs are still nothing more than a young, niche market.

AWD is back, but not on the Prime. Rear motor now permanent magnet-type, combined power + 2hp vs fwd. All batteries are Li-ion and the Prime's range is 38 miles vs the old car's 25.

Nice! 60 km of EV range. Most commuters will never need the ICE during the week, especially if they can plug in at work. These will sell like hot cakes.

The new Prius has many Easter eggs, but this is my fave - the letters are heated!

Is this going to be another one of those cars that you want, can afford, but can't buy or have to wait 2 years to get?
I love it when a plan comes together.

Like ALL of Toyota's Hybrids, I think that's a guarantee.

This is what the 4th gen Prius should've been. It's still distinctly Prius and it's like a sexier 2nd gen more than anything.

Never understood why it seems so hard to design a good looking car. Too many engineers in the management team? It can't be more expensive to manufacture, so why not hire someone who can design something that looks good? The best thing Hyundai/Kia did was hiring European designers back in the day

https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2021/09/opinion-how-hyundai-and-kia-have-made-design-a-strength/

Unfortunately they seemed to have hired European mechanical engineers too

Since they started making more hybrids for mainstream tastes, Prius stuck around as the flagship hybrid, the pinnacle of hybrid engineering. But they focused too much on the engineering last gen. The new Prius is amazing.

Looks pretty good!!! I like the color too.  Toyota!

Sticking with hybrid and PHEV is a smart and safe move at least for the forseeable future.
