Looks surprisingly good!!

I can't recall a bigger aesthetic improvement in a new model of any car in recent history.  No longer the nerd-mobile poster child.

Indeed, after the Crown, my hopes were not great!

New pics in silver with interior shots:

Looks great.  Headroom might be an issue in the rear seat.

I was not expecting such a great looking car. Good job Toyota, this will undoubtedly sell well.

It's a hybrid and a PHEV....  exactly what the Prius nameplate has always been.

Much more desirable sex appeal for sure!  8)

Yeap, rear seat headroom looks even worst than my 1st gen Volt, may data confirm this later...

Yeah!

I showed the pics to Bella & told her this should be her next purchase in a couple of years & she thought it looked great! She was NOT a fan of the current generation.

Agree with everyone, this looks really good. In terms of rear head room, in the pictures it looks like there are indentations in the roof...maybe for someone's head?
I love it when a plan comes together.

I wonder if Prius is going upscale a bit. Put some distance between it and the Corolla hybrid...with styling and the plug-in aspect. 20% increase in price may not be surprising then.

So $45k or so for a fully loaded Prime

Yes. Which doesn't seem so bad for what you're getting.

So much want!

Going by the Euro numbers it sounds like it should be quite easy to get 50+ km on battery.
I would hope so...I get 45km

Huge missed opportunity to upgrade the Prius brand.

They should have done hybrid, phev and fully electric - Hyundai was hugely successful with a somewhat similar approach in the Kona (granted they didn’t offer a PHEV)…

I think the real issue here is….the Japanese don’t have anything to offer that is fully electric because they are years behind the competition.

Maybe they see how current tech doesn’t meet the requirements for people who feel that 400kms of range isn’t enough and charging for half an hour for 80% charge isn’t enough for them.  Not to mention the lower range seen in our climate during winter months.

Plus, I would assume sourcing battery and electric motors would take volume away from their very successful and proven hybrid and and just gradually moving into PHEV.  I would assume Toyota will have EVs around the time when tech has caught up with current ICE vehicles in that you can drive 600+kms on a single charge and only take 15 minutes to get to that 80% charge on the road.

Yea...to be part of a 5.5% market share where most everyone is losing money.    :rofl2:  Where foreign EV vehicles are excluded from new EV rebates.  Where the domestics aren't projected to turn a profit until (maybe) 2025 on their EVs. Where Toyota's latest quarterly profits were ~$3 billion...and Ford's losses were near $1 billion.  Where by selling an EV you exclude non-home owners.  Where there is next to nill for charging infrastructure.  I'm sure Toyota is beside themselves.    :rofl2:

The Prime was already in the top 3 for most fuel efficient (eMPG) on the market.  And this one might be better yet.  All without the need for a full EV.

I think Toyota knows exactly what they're doing.

While it looks much better than the outgoing model, to me the biggest news is how much faster it has become. The PHEV version (220 hp) is reported to spring to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds, so about 6.5 sec to 60 then. And the 2.0L "common" hybrid will probably be in the low 7 seconds. There is available (?) AWD and a double wish bone rear suspension. In other words, this may actually be a grown up and enjoyable car to drive.
P.s. I'm guessing the high rear seat might have something to do with a large PHEV battery.
P.s. various sources report availability of a 1.8L engine as well, so it looks like they want to keep the starting MSRP relatively low for the segment.

It was already an enjoyable and grown up car to drive being that's it's already on the TNGA platform.

I drove the current hybrid corolla and I wouldn't call it that, despite the platform. Slow and buzzy engine, uncomfortable seats, disconnected steering, road noise and so on. My intention was to buy it but there were just too many negatives to ignore. Powaaahhh! will rectify most of those things  ;)
