fast charge - pay by credit card
« on: September 10, 2022, 06:18:26 pm »
On a recent trip we charged up at Petrocan station, activated and paid for by tapping our credit card.   Since we don't have a cell phone (rates too expensive) we were very impressed.  We are now planning our next trip by where the credit card reading chargers are located.

Have a look at this article:  EV drivers call for credit card tap system at charging stations for easier user experience

Good luck with that. While I prefer the tap-a-card charge points too, relying on only those ones is a bit of a gamble since the public chargers are horribly unreliable in my experience with PetroCanada's being the worst.  Try Electrify Canada for better, more consistent systems that will allow card-tapping.

Speaking of Petro Can EV chargers, I saw a guy in a pickup truck proudly blocking two EV charging spots at a Petro Canada gas station in Golden, probably pointing out to his partner and kids how EV owners were a bunch of freeloaders and how it was dumb to have to charge an electric vehicle for 30 minutes every 400 km, as they stayed there for 45 minutes having a smoke and dinner break.

As you are aware, we can use a Visa card (for example) at almost every gas station between the arctic Circle and the Gulf of Mexico to gas up our ICE vehicles.  EV charging has to standardize and the best way for customers is with a credit card reader on the charger unit.    I can understand the appeal of a cell phone app but it has to be one app good everywhere accompanied by a single EV account card good everywhere.  In BC the FLO card can be used at chargers of several networks such as BC Hydro.  That's a start.

You watched a guy at a gas station for 45 minutes?  ;D

I was at DQ having a dinner break with the kids.  :P Would've been a good opportunity to charge an EV if I had one.
