All Weather opinions
« on: June 12, 2022, 06:36:56 pm »
Visiting my daughter in Vancouver right now. She will need new tires on her Acura RDX in a few months. I’m trying to decide if all weathers might be a good solution. She does go to Whistler a few times a year and her job sometimes requires driving to work for 6 or 7 AM (before a 5-10cm Vancouver snowfall may have melted). Dedicated snows are probably out do to storage and changeover costs.

I’d be interested in hearing opinions/experiences with all weathers and who makes a good one?  Also, any negatives in terms of summer driving?

I don't know anyone who has them. Consumer reports like them.  My local tires shop says they have sold a fair number and their customers like them.
So maybe the Michelin Cross Climate II   would do the job.

I am sort of considering  them for the winter tires on the Golf R.     But then I don't need to go anywhere on snow days.

If dedicated snows are out, then I guess all weathers are the only option. I’d never drive to Whistler on all seasons, but I’m sure people do.

I recommended some Nokian all weathers to my mom in Calgary. They seem ok in warmer winter weather, so probably fine for Vancouver. But even my 75 year old mother commented on the worse handling in the summer compared to her previous all seasons. This was on a 2012 Audi A4.

I think a couple people here have the Cross Climates and seem to like them. I’m sure there’s a thread somewhere.

I've had the Hankook all weathers for years, they handle summer driving fine as well as spring/summer/ice up to about -10 or so

The parents have had various Nokian WR's for a long time in the Shuswap, they have been pretty good with them too, Dad used to take them to Silverstar to go skiing regularly

I believe All weathers are made for the milder Vancouver climate w/occasional mountain trips, which is much like how Europeans use them

Less sold on them for winter tires in Edmonton, the compound goes as hard as an all season when it gets really cold

Pretty sure Ron will sing the praises for All-Weathers, hasn't he been running them for a couple years now?

In my mind, Vancouver is EXACTLY the climate All Weathers are meant for.

Yeah, that was my thought. Winters are probably overkill but there are still days/situations where I’d be happier if she was on something better than all seasons

If snows really aren't an option, all weathers are the next best choice.

Those are the ones.  If your uptight about the "tread" depth then toss them every 2 years.

The Vrededtein Quatrac Pro are fantastic! They were so good on IQs TT that she said she no longer felt she needed dedicated winters. When she got her A5 she insisted on the same tire again. So we've had them 2X. The ride quality is also superb and they are quiet.

I also have all weather's on my FWD Prius. Michelin Cross Climate+. There's a "2" version now and I'd suspect they are better.

Anyways, they're "ok". They feel closer to an all season tire on the winter whereas the Vreds feel closer to a winter tire. I'll be swapping them out in the fall as they are about done after...hmmm...I'm guessing 60k or so (I'd have to look).

I really want the Vred Quatrac Pros but they don't make them in 15s.  So I might get some 17 inch rims just to be able to run those. Otherwise I MIGHT try just the regular Vred Quatrac. But the mileage rating on the Vreds is only 400 vs 600 (which is why they're better in the winter I suspect). And I do lots of driving in the Prius.  Otherwise both Bridgestone and Nokian have new all weather's so might try one of them. Leaning Bridgestone.

At this point, I don't see myself going back to dedicated winters.

I have CrossClimate 2 and had them for a year now. They are fine but don't expect them to perform as winter tires on snow covered roads.

How about an all-terrain tire?

Falken makes a mild AT tire for crossovers that has the severe snow rating.

https://www.falkentire.com/tires/light-truck-suv-cuv-tires/wildpeak/t-trail-tire

My friend in Vancouver has them on his 2020 Rav4 and they were very smooth and quiet when I drove it last week. He takes them on logging / gravel roads during occasional camping trips.

I have Nokian WRG4 on the Legacy.
Three years and 50k km later, the only complaint is a bit more road noise.
I estimate they will be good for another year.

General AW365 as a good bargain. I am impressed with the company's current winter tires.

The WRG4 has the Moutain Snowflake logo making it a more winter bias tires than the Encompass. I had the previous gn<en WR2 many years ago on a XC90 and it was quite good winter and summer.

The Encompass has the Mountain Snowflake too.  ALL the All Weather tires in the discussion have the Mountain Snowflake logo.

The Encompass AW01 meets the tire industry's severe snow service requirements and is branded with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.

They seem to give that symbol out like candy nowadays. I think the minimum requirement is having winter traction that's 10% better than a reference tire.

I agree that not all tires are created equal that have the symbol.

Which is another reason I like tire testing with time-to-speed numbers. And braking numbers for tires with the mountain snowflake.

I also think the standard should be modernized as it was established in 1999.
