Current Toyota Hybrids come with 10 years 240k warranty on the battery and hybrid components. 8 years /160k seems a bit on a cautious side. No one would want to get stuck with a used bZ whose battery is $20-30 grand to replace should it unexpectedly fail. I wish they offered a battery lease option.

Unlikely the whole battery will fail totally. Some cells may fail but can be replaced. Likely the battery capacity will go down and one may end up after 10 years with a car with a 320 km range vs 400.

Still make a very capable winter beater or commuter; which is what most 10 years old car end up being anyway.

I'd guess in ten years battery tech is likely to be substantially cheaper and/or higher in performance anyway

If a battery pack is at the point of degradation where a few cells fail, while indeed they could be replaced, who is to say another one or two won't fail a few weeks later. Proper warranty or lease. These cars won't be worth a whole lot 8 years down the road.

Eight year old Nissan Leaf which had 160 km range when brand new anyone?

If you guys drop 10 bucks on a cup of latte, who is to stop you from buying an out of warranty Tesla for what a new BMW is worth  ;)

Lol lattes are $5 at the usual chains. It's the real estate that's more concerning. What's a $45,000 out of warranty Tesla compared to a $3 million tear down house?

Prolly the only way Toyota could come up to sell them - the air cooled battery does not inspire much confidence on their durability.

Or Toyota is supremely confident in their longevity in that application.

They've been building batteries a long time...

Reportedly the FWD bZ use Panasonic cells and the pack will charge at 150kW while the AWD models come with CATL supplied cells and they top out at 100kW. This could explain why Toyota would want to limit the battery warranty to 160k, since up until now they've only used (IIRC) Panasonic for Li-ion batteries and may not have a long term dependability study into other suppliers.
