Surprise Outback
« on: April 09, 2022, 09:53:41 am »
I was getting out of Subaru, our Outback VDC was just getting too rusty and brake lines and fuel lines were starting to give out, drivetrain still runs perfectly of course.   So I was trying to find someone to make an ice-racer, use the drivetrain, something, had a lot of bites, but no buyers who would offer me even scrap prices.

Around New Years a friend with an Outback called me to ask about transmission problems in his 2005, it had almost 400k on it and was starting to act up, not going into gears property, stalling, occasional bangs when it did go into 1st.  He said he had checked the fluid level and it was fine, I reminded him there were two dipsticks and the one he checked was the differential, he said he couldn't get the other one out and just didn't care about the car any longer, just wanted something newer and reliable and he wanted to know where to take it for scrap.
I told him I'd buy it for scrap prices and at worst could swap in my transmission and get it going...or not and scrap it myself...which would be a shame as it's in really nice condition.    So I bought it, drove it a bit to diagnose, put some penetrating oil on the dipstick tube, but it mostly sat until last week when I could get it into the garage and up on ramps.   Quickly found the transmission was indeed leaking as suspected and low on fluid, the leak was from a rusty screw-on filter!   I replaced it for $12, filled with Subaru HP fluid, it runs perfectly now.

So here's our new-to-us 2005 Outback that cost us $600 plus about $75, my wife loves driving it, she always found the Cayenne a little large.

Dang, that’s almost TheHire level of frugalness for a daily driver (referring to his budget R Class Merc).  So now you have a parts car and a runner?  Or are you going to still try to part out the old one?

Looks clean and decently well maintained.

The old one has a H6, this is a H4, most of the body and trim doesn't match either.   I've already let a friend's kid strip a bunch of parts he wanted for his as it matched up.   I'll still try to sell it as an ice-racer or drivetrain donor, but don't have much use for it myself any longer.   I took out the McIntosh stereo, but all the door speakers already had rotten cones, only the subwoofer was still good.

Heh, that's hilarious. Especially in this market, to get something good basically for free like that. Nice job!

I only had $300 cash on me when I bought it, two months later I had to trick him into giving me his email attached to his eTransfer to deposit the rest, he didn't want the other $300

Great buy and great story!

I find this vintage Outback better looking than the new ones.

Good job. In Ontario will they automatically insure something that old or do you need to get it inspected?

Every time a vehicle changes hands it needs an inspection, then not until it changes hands again.

I had it inspected right after I got it to see what it might cost to put it on the road, I think it needed a license plate light or something like that.

I love it when super cheap cars need simple fixes to get them running again.

Have the head gaskets ever been changed? Probably once?

Probably, but that reminds me to get some Subaru coolant conditioner.

That looks minty for a Subaru of that age and mileage! Good find.

Our Outback VDC is two years older but a much nicer car, 50hp more with a smooth engine, McIntosh stereo, leather,  better HVAC controls, fake wood, soundproofing.

But this one isn't missing a rear bumper and the brakes work....so there's that.
Driving them I always feel like I'm in a 7/8 scale model of a car, it's just made for shorter people, much like our Miata.
Fine for my wife, but I sit a little too high.

Hard to fault a deal like that! There's a kid in the neighborhood, near The Hire actually, who has an older one of these that he's been piecing together from multiple parts cars. It's an absolute derelict Frankenstein looking machine, but he's kept it on the road for at least 4 years now
