Doesn't seem like the Corolla has the best acceleration or handling based on Motortrends testing.  https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2023-toyota-gr-corolla-first-test-review/

That being said, I'm not sure this is truly a production model or just a early model that is given to journals for review.  It's plenty fast enough for fun, I was just expecting a little more with the 0-60 time considering it's AWD.

It’s still only a 1.6L with a peaky power band.

I'm so happy that I don't give a :censor: about 0-60 times. I'm constantly being help up by other cars in traffic but maybe it is all that extra power the CVT is pushing through making the Rolla a rocket ship off the line.  :rofl2:

Photos taken from Throttle House. If the GRRolla is slow, then the Type R is even slower and the Elantra N is extremely slow.  :P

I've never driven any of them and I get why they're all being compared, but I can't imagine the Civic, Elantra, Kona don't have a completely different feel because of the size and the fact that they're not hot hatches.  In my mind it's really between the Golf, Veloster and Corolla, and the Corolla is the one I'd be most interested in if I was in the market

I think this GR Corolla is going to be very high on the smiles per miles ratio!

Quick technical tour and an oil change. I was shocked to see the owner didn't bring his own oil  :P

Simple... my first thought would've been to check one of the Japanese oil brands used by most JDM manufacturers - Eneos or Idemitsu and sure enough, 0w-20 oil from both is compatible with both standards mentioned in the video.

I see the mechanic's point of view. He used to work at the Toyota dealer and knows their oil is supplied by Mobil, so playing it safe is a sound business practice, just in case that engine blows up down the road.
Maybe the owner is of the same opinion, just wants a reliable service record in case something needs to be proven to the dealer.

I don't know how good those Eneos or Idemitsu oils are as there are virtually no reviews available on them here. If I were to follow the car's manual, PPU would probably be on top of my list, great stuff and meets every mentioned requirement.

Mobile 1, Castrol and others do have the newer standards mentioned so no issue at all.

Subaru OEM oil you buy from the dealership is made by Idemitsu. I think Ron was saying Lexus/Toyota uses/used Eneos. It is very possible in NA they use something else from one of the popular companies - Mobile 1, Castrol, Shell, etc. BMW oil sold in NA is Shell. Mitsu uses Mobile 1, VW same (used to be Castrol but no more).... so not really a wrong answer as long as required standard is met.

Probably the factory fill was with one of these two brands.

I for one, would use a Japanese oil in this thing just for the sake of it ....

Seems to be doing good, mind you a lot of that depends on the drivers.  Would have loved to be able to hear it from the outside a bit more.

Dyno test....
https://youtu.be/a9GWfv1WVY0

They didn’t put it in FWD mode. Claiming they did but they are way off everyone else.  You had to do this with the Focus RS as well.

Yup it would be great  if you could actually get one. On the toyota .ca build and price the Core only offers 3 shades ,white, black and red. No mention of the other models either. https://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/build-price/gr-corolla
