I would say that this car is a modern, spiritual successor to the Subaru WRX STI. It has permanent AWD with a driver selectable front to rear torque split ratio. No other FWD biased vehicle has permanent AWD other than the current WRX and it is a pale shadow of what it could have been. That car's drivetrain is essentially unchanged for 10+ years. Plus it's made by Toyota and hence should be reliable beyond it's warranty period i.e. it's a keeper. Goes to show that when Toyota put's their mind to it, they can come up with a winner. After all, they have the financial and engineering resources to do it.

I am not so sure about pricing though specifically for the Canadian market. Unlike our friends at VW Canada who have really ensured that the GTI but specially the R are tremendous value here in the North, Toyota/Lexus have not exhibited such a preference :) for Canada in their other products. So I will hold off on celebrating until Canadian pricing is out.

Could be a collector though.  Look at the Civic Type R.  Still holds incredible used value.

I looked at the price of a loaded GTI and it is $45K.  That is horrible value.  Gotta go Golf R and that is $50K which seems like a steal in comparison.  But in isolation, pricey.  But yet undeniably cool.

It’s only money.  And taxes.  Can’t forget about taxes.

Yep, it could be a collector. That's why I said it will be a keeper with Toyota's long term reliability record.

The 7.5 gen GTI was a relative bargain, the 8th gen is not, specially for the fully loaded Autobahn trim. At the price that is being charged for the 8th gen fully loaded Autobahn the R is a screaming bargain!! Wasn't the last Type R pushing 50k plus taxes? I think that Toyota will price the GR beyond that, in the 50s .......Let's see......

How do the Torsen LSD's compare to open?

Get the power down better on dry pavement, but worse on snow/ice?
I might be wrong, but the difference in my mind is open diffs you'll see one wheel spinning away, where as LSD's will split that power to both wheels, most of the time evenly.  The way I think of it is if you see a burn out with one tire on the road, that's an open diff, when you see two sets of tires rubber on the road, that's because they have a LSD.

Torsen LSD is pure engineering magic:

It is superior in my understanding to clutch pack LSDs and even more so to open diffs where torque vectoring is done by car brakes. There is nothing there to wear out for as long as the oil is fresh.

This is cool too! 2 seater version!

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a40152252/2023-toyota-gr-corolla-morizo-edition-details/

A four door with two seats seems really dumb.
It would if the back seats were really useful in said vehicle, in a Corolla hatch they are only suitable for small children anyway, so no big loss in my book.

Sure, but two seats and 4 doors is dumb.  Not that it matters, I'm sure every one they make will sell.

This is the track focused version.  Other manufacturers have done this.  Do you remember the Honda S2000 CR?  It had a hardtop that was removable but no soft top, radio, less thick windshield, etc, to be a track focused offering.  Not a great daily to be sure.

The Mustang Cobra R ditched the rear seats and you can do a rear seat delete in the Mach 1 and GT500.

But I agree, 4 doors and no rear seats seems strange!

I believe GM sold a 2-seat version of the Blazer a few years ago. I actually like the idea: just a bigger load floor in the back, with easy access from the sides via the doors.

In the twelve years I’ve owned my GTI, I think I’ve had people in the back seat twice. But I’d still never trade it for a 2-door.

Yeah, there's a reason all extended cab pickups have doors in the back now, even when the space is mostly used to store stuff

Nice looking hot hatch, much better than the Civic to my eyes.  Will be interesting to see how they price it

US Pricing announced - $36995-$50995

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a41075018/2023-toyota-gr-corolla-pricing/
I saw that, but it's more like $38K+ if you want one with the limited slip diffs.  I don't know why they even offer a base model without those things.  That top price is just a limited edition, so the price is really between $37K and around $45K.  For our market I'd expect there will likely be less options and trim levels.  So likely the "base" model for us will likely be the middle trim and be closer to the $50K mark.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if we get two trims without any options.

If you can buy the Core + Performance + Tech + Cold packages for $39,445, what more are you getting in the Circuit for $43,995?
