Toyota GR Corolla Tease
« on: November 23, 2021, 06:36:56 pm »
No, it won't be anywhere near as good as the GR Yaris.

But a 268HP, AWD Corolla would probably be amusing.

Well no specs have been given yet and as you know that platform is really good, so don’t write it off as less than GR Yaris.  They could target the GTI or go higher up and go for the Golf R.  I hear that the manual in the GR Yaris is especially robust and can handle North of 350hp and still be reliable, can’t say that about the VW manual.

Any new addition in the sport compacts is welcome in my book:

so don’t write it off as less than GR Yaris.

It absolutely is less than the GR Yaris.  Period.  Clearly you don't know the entire story of the GR Yaris?

They started with their Rally car program and built it into a street car.  HUGE difference.  It's pretty crazy what they did, actually.  It's also not built on the Yaris line.  It's built on a GR Yaris-only line that was built (from scratch) for the purpose.

This will be an off the shelf Corolla made into a "rally" car.

But yea....with ~300HP, 6 speed manual and AWD...it would still be a hoot!  I'm definitely not saying it won't be fun.

But the GR Yaris is special.

Oh I get that, I’m just saying it might be premature to say the Corolla GR won’t live up to the Yaris version.  They will be sharing the same powertrain, just need to see what they do with suspension, braking, tuning, etc.  You likely will be right, but maybe they surprise us.

I'm just thinking because the GR Yaris is essentially bespoke...and is smaller and lighter...it will be tough for the Corolla to match.

I still think the GR Corolla will be loads of fun.  And with me grumpy about having to park my car for the winter....something like this is surely on my radar.

Agreed, the bar is set very high because of how special that Yaris is, more than likely going to get watered down for the general masses, but the end of ICE cars are near, so maybe they go nuts with it.  Can’t deny they aren’t capable, just have to get by the bean counters and marketing people.  That’s what went wrong with the new Supra.

I drove the new Supra and love it.  It's fantastic.

Is it confirmed that the Corolla GR will be AWD and MT? Will the AWD be derived from the one used in Yaris GR or RAV4 and likes?

I think the devil is in details but nevertheless it will be an interesting and welcomed option.

Powertrain from GR Yaris.  Engine, stick, AWD apparently.

That would be awesome if true.

Allegedly closer to 300HP to compensate for the extra weight of the Corolla.

Even with only 225-250 HP and AWD I'd still want this thing.

If this did come, what would pricing be though? Top trim XSE hatch is already $30K before fees and crap.

I'm guessing 40k minimum. Priced in line with STI, Golf R and Type R.

Can't wait to see actual specs and performance.

it's not...i'm just saying, it might be Toyota's answer to those types of vehicles...to give someone options in that "sport compact" segment.

It's clear the want to expand the "GR" line in North America.  The have the GR86 and GR Supra.  So I suppose this makes sense to bridge that gap in price.

They should've made it with the Rav4 Prime drivetrain and a stick...then you'd get shitload of power AND fantastic economy. Right?  Might be a bit of a porker, but so what.
