Mike’s New Beater
« on: November 13, 2021, 02:12:04 pm »
Since I won’t be commuting anymore and no longer have access to insane lease rates through work, I grabbed a new beater. It’s a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T. It’s the base model with the 6MT. It was actually my brother in law’s who bought it new. I know the car very well as I was there when he bought and have performed every winter/summer tire switchover on it.

It only has 123,000km on it and is in great shape inside and out for its age. It did sit in an underground garage for two years without moving much, so some mechanical issues had to be resolved. But the good folks at Clarkson Fine Cars took care of them all and it’s it running fantastic.

Brace yourself for snarky comments about steelies.   :rofl2:

Does it sit lower than stock, or is it just an optical illusion?

Also, we have very different definitions of “beater.”  Lovely ride.

It’s stock. But the suspension is a bit worn. But the price point definitely makes it a beater.

Sweet ride man. I had a shot at a 3.8 manual a little while back and should have taken it.

Nice beater.  I test drove one of these back in 2009 and thought it was a hoot.  If memory serves this had the same engine as the Mitsubishi Evo.  So if you want to tinker with it plenty of power to unlock.

Would have been a hoot to hoon around in winter with proper tires.

What's your excuse? [emoji2]

Can't go wrong with a cheap RWD manual beater, looks more than halfway decent too!

What does the Ontario government value that vehicle for sales tax purposes?

Nice "beater". Congrats! I think I've seen it at CFC the other day while there.

Nothing like sport cloth seats of the old times.

What does the Ontario government value that vehicle for sales tax purposes?

BTW: How does that actually work these days? When I bought the BMW I was expecting to pay tax on a higher value upon registration in Ontario since I think the "average transaction price" for the car is significantly higher than what I actually paid for it. However, I was charged the tax based on the sale price on the BoS which was $4,000+ less than what I've seen on a UVIP package for a similar car (same year but lower mileage - $127K vs 178K).

depending on the vehicle, the MTO may have a "book value" of it...you would pay tax based on your receipt or the "book value", whichever is greater.

so, if the vehicle has a "book value" of $4000 and you bring a receipt for $5000, you pay tax based on $5000 (which would be $650)...if you bring in a receipt for $2500, you pay tax based on the "book value" of $4000 (which would be $520)...if the vehicle has no "book value", you pay tax based on your receipt.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.
