I might be wrong but I believe car insurance was optional when I first got my license.   :-\  Regardless, it was so cheap back then it was barely a consideration.

You must be my vintage - I think I paid $90 a year for an MGB when I was 16.

I had a '74 TR6 that I got in 1976 when I was 17. I honestly don't remember for sure but $120 rings a bell ($10/month)

Nice!

My Datsun 510 was not pretty when I got it being an old $300 car. But being as it was bought with my own money I could do what I wanted and took great delight in working on it. Fixed the rust, painted it, overhauled the engine, put in Volvo seats, etc. Was my only vehicle for about ten years

Remember my first ticket being more than the car was worth

My first car, a 1969 MGB. Bought it $1250 certified before I got my licence at 16. Didn't know how to drive a standard transmission. My Dad drove it almost all the way home from the city till we got a mile or two away from our home. He pulled over on a dirt road and let me drive the rest of the way home. ;D
I learned how to do stuff like brakes, oil changes, anti-freeze fluid changes, thermostat changes, batteries, paint and body work, etc. etc.
It would stand me in well for the next car.

Looks like it, but it's actually a rotary grain cleaner on a home made hopper wagon

"rotary grain cleaner"? - Never heard of one. Does that mean the combine didn't remove enough of the chaff in it's harvesting process?

Back in the day we didn't spray herbicides, so you could get the previous crop volunteering in the current one, ie barley in canola

Ship it that way and you'd lose the volunteer as dockage that the grain buyer would happily separate out and sell them themselves, so sometimes it paid to screen the crop

This would be the 'Snowco' we used:

Finally after a long wait, the kid got his car. Needed new rear brakes for safety (paid by owner). Summer tires are toast (which we knew) so winter tires/wheels are on it. He insisted on getting "the same snow tires you use", so he ordered a set of X-Ice Snow today. They go on Friday.

Spent much time detailing and polishing the paint. Interior is mint. Someone loved this car. Exterior, while having some tiny dings from usual use, shows really, really well.  Must have been garaged for much of its life. Front of hood has X-pel, so hood is perfect.

Overall a super nice little car and I'm pleased I found it. Boy is thrilled, of course.

Was funny teaching him about getting insurance, making sure he had ALL his documentation ready and in order for the MTO. Thought it odd he insisted one of us go in the bank with him. But he's never actually had to go to a teller to withdraw money so he didn't know what to do! LOL

I have a picture of the interior, but it was dark by the time I finished the exterior, so I'll get that later.

Very happy for the lad.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Wow so nice to hear of a kid buying his own car and not having daddy / mommy pay for it. I think it is important for kids to save and buy things on their own and learn the value of money. So funny to hear that he has never been at a bank teller before. Funny he finds that intimidating and us old farts find technology intimidating.

I see young 20 somethings driving beautiful Audi's and BMW's I wonder what will aspire to.

I think of cars I have owned over the years (some / most very crappy). As I afforded better and better cars it was always a thrill.

Good choice for a used car. How many Kms on it????

Hope he gets a lot of enjoyment out of his first car.

If you want more in life you have to make an effort.

We've been big on him earning and/or getting his own things.

We're glad it's "paying" off.

Current mileage is 155k.

Winter mode with new X-Ice Snow

Will you be taking it for a test run when it snows? I got the same tires on the Rolla. On dry roads, they feel fine, not much different than the OE (Primacy A/S) tires.
