Well the 17 year old kid bought his first car today!

2009 Acura CSX. One owner. Comes with winter wheels/tires.

Clean car, well taken car of. Should be a good first car.

Peculiar that CSX are same/cheaper than similar Civics.

Will get some pictures up shortly.

The great thing about that generation of CSX was that the Type S came with the same drivetrain as the Civic SI - The K20Z3 with the six-speed manual.  Except you could get it in a car with leather.  The Civic SI came with cloth seats only - you had to step 'down' (although it was more of a lateral slide) to the EX-L if you wanted leather, but then you got just the regular 1.8 engine.  So, if you wanted a Civic SI with leather, the CSX Type S was the way to go. 

BUT, even the 'regular' CSX models came with an engine upgrade over the Civic.  They came with the 2.0L K20Z2, good for 155hp, 15 better than the Civic's 140hp.  It was limited to 6800rpm (compared to 8200 for the Z3), and had a 9.8:1 compression ratio, compared to the Z3's 11.0:1 compression ratio.  The VTEC system was completely different, too.  BUT, at least the K20Z2 was still a DOHC unit, compared to the Civic's 1.8 which was a SOHC engine.

Either way you get it (Type S, or 'regular), the CSX was an upgrade over the regular Civic, and not just in the interior/feature department.

Nice Ron.

We've started looking from a high level for a car for our oldest, he's 16 in February.  I just want to get an idea of price points for now. I'm not seriously looking, however I think he is  :rofl2:.  Everything is on the table right now, from older compacts to Crown Vics.

Good suggestions, I've been keeping my eye out for Rangers.  Problem is decent ones are like any trucks right now... spendy.

Those old Rangers are basically indestructible. 

More or less.  Mine had a finicky clutch slave cylinder that would have been expensive to replace as it meant dropping the transmission.  Sometimes I would just completely lose clutch.  I got in the habit of wedging a snow brush against the clutch pedal to keep it depressed while parked - a trick that my mechanic taught me.  I was able to basically limp it along for a couple of years until I got rid of it.   I got very good at shifting clutchless in that truck - both down and upshifts. 

Heck, they're so damned durable, I actually rolled mine into a ditch, called a tow truck to get it out of the ditch and upright, and then drove it home.  Only damage was a little dent on the front fender.  A Ranger is the perfect vehicle for a noob driver - bonus points if they're learning how to drive stick.  The manual on that truck is bulletproof.

I had a 97 Mazda B2300.  It went through a set of ball joints, a couple of upper control arms, an O2 sensor, and I think that may have been it. Had it until 160k km or so.  Things do go on them, but they are pretty easy to fix. 

The only hard part will be finding one that hasn't rusted to pieces.

I doubt it.  It's the same block as the K20Z3 - a complete different design than the R18A1 in the Civic. 

To my knowledge, the K20 engines didn't have any major problems at all.

I don't think that will be a problem in Alberta.  I still see tons of them on the road here in Manitoba.

Car was more than insurance. Insurance less that I thought he'd pay. About $3k year.

All of this is on his own dime too. Started working full time in an apprenticeship the week he graduated.
