With manual transmissions I don't find the auto stop/start intrusive at all. As Johnny mentioned you can just keep the clutch in to prevent the engine from turning off. I can't say it ever bothered me on our Minis.

With an automatic it's slightly more annoying because you don't have the same level of control.

Both vehicles I've driven with stop start, a rented Tiguan and a work Equinox, have given check engine lights when stumbling after trying to restart at a stop, check engine lights that needed to be cleared with a tool

Think stop/start should stick to hybrids, which seem to deal with it better

Bendix driven Stop/Start is obscene.   No other way to describe it.  These imposed moronic MPG calculations accelerated by the Obama people, serve no purpose other than to add ridiculous costs and wasted material inputs into starters, AMG batteries, and ultimately a ton of labour changing these starters and ring gears out.  So incredibly STUPID.

So the U.S. gets a 40th anniversary GTI model that is available in Tornado Red and comes with a golfball shifter!

Spoiler: we'll have the same. And they already all have a golf-ball shifter... it's just on the back side  ;)

I am not entirely sure why but this looks better to my eyes than the Golf R.

^^ Agree. It’s because it’s comfortable in its skin…I find the R is overreaching.
I love it when a plan comes together.

I've always preferred the look of the GTI to the R.

I agree the GTI looks better. The R is perhaps a bit over the DB line.

I have always felt the GTI is easier to distinguish between the two.  So at least with the last generation, the Golf R is the "sleeper" and the GTI more the "in your face" car (not that either are really in your face).

I recently went with a friend who was taking delivery of this King's Red GTI. Beautiful color, I much prefer it to the discontinued Tornado Red. This car is a manual in the Autobahn trim with the 19" inch wheel and sunroof package, although the wheels in the picture are 18" with winter tires. So we drove straight from the dealer to get Weathertech floor liners with my friend driving on the way out. On the way back I drove the car and got a great feel for an 8th gen manual vs my 7.5 gen DSG. It was mostly highway but with some city streets thrown in.

My first impression is how much smoother the engine sounds, huge improvements in engine NVH vs the 7.5 gen. Whether this is due to sound insulation, better engine mounting points or re-worked engine architecture I can't say, but both at idle as well as upto the 3000 rpm mark, the engine sounds so much better than the 7.5 gen. i did go beyond a third of the throttle nor rev it beyond 3000 rpm as the car had only 39 km on the odometer!! And of course the manual is so much more satisfying to drive, although purely from a speed maintenance and acceleration viewpoint the DSG is superior.

And as far as the elephant in the room is concerned, my only interaction with the touch screen was to adjust the temperature and fan speed, not when I was driving but as the passenger while my friend drove. And it was not bad, it did not take long for me to figure it out, fairly intuitive, although this was the very first time that I had interacted with that touchscreen. Anyway, I will be in regular touch with my friend to see how he adapts to this
GTI touchscreen, specially interesting as he is transitioning from a Mk 6 Golf which is all analogue.

Shark fin is so early 2000s lol. I like the rear, do not care for front. Where does one drive for weather tech liners? I thought they are online? I hope he got some 3M for that hood.

Weathertech have a retail outlet on Walkers Line in Burlington, although some other specialty parts shops also have them in stock, the selection at those places may not be great.

Interesting, no idea they had bricks and mortar.  I usually go weather tech however on this last vehicle the Volvo OEM rubber liner mats are awesome (soft heavy natural rubber) and are cheap $150ish so didn't even look for weather techs. Actually found a nice set (front/back) in Kijij for $30 so that was a win.

Perhaps the shark fin design works the best for XM.  However do at least colour match the fin.   Overall it's a good looking vehicle.  But I can't get past those odd lower "log lights".  What's with the 5 tiny lights?

Got to take some good with the bad.  2024 Mustang looks like the same stupid thing.

They really nailed the looks with this generation.  The little changes they made give it more presence than the Mk7.

You said it. A subtle reshaping of the headlights makes such a huge difference in looks, the headlights are thinner/flatter and nicely re-shaped  In contrast see the front/grille of my Mk 7.5...notice the headlights look plain Jane vs the 8th gen . This minimalist approach is nice compared to the overwrought designs you see nowadays, from the Japanese and even BMW.
