I think 1/2s have topped out at the 400HPish mark and I don't really see the need for more. If someone really needs more capability then they step up to 3/4 or 1 ton models anyway which blows any 1/2 ton out the water. Most 1/2s tow holiday trailers at 5000lbs and or haul air 99% of time. I like what Ram did by recognizing this and having the barco lounger coil spring rear is awesome. Of course RAM has the 3/4 and 1 tons to fall back on for those who need capability. Toyota does not.

The twin-turbo 3.4 liter V6 in the LS500 makes 416 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid LS500h uses a normally aspirated 3.5 liter V6 combined with two electric motors for a total of 354 hp. I would expect similar numbers for the Tundra. Car and Driver tested the LS500 and found it down on power vs the German competition and was also not impressed with the hybrid LS500h:

Quote
the hybrid arrangement feels unrefined and altogether not luxurious. The engine sounds raspy and coarse, and the transmission—a mashup of a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and a regular four-speed automatic—steps through preset gear ratios with all the crispness of a soggy cornflake.

And it is also possible that Toyota combines the twin turbo V6 with the electric motors for a combined ~450-500 hp as a Tundra TRD Raptor fighter.

Here's the official photo.

Keep in mind..this is the TRD Pro. The normal trims will be a bit more tame apparently

Well it’s hard to compare how a engine will handle in a luxury barge and a pickup.  I’m sure if you put the truck engine from the domestics into a luxury barge it too would be underwhelming.  Different expectations.

I think Toyota is going offer a couple of really good powertrain options and competitive capabilities.  Being a Toyota it will have built in sales from past customers so I think they would have to really screw up if they don’t have a winner on their hands.

I guess to tune turbo engines for different applications is easier than shoe horning V8s though even there Chrysler has done a pretty good job with the 5.7 liter Hemi (Charger/Chrysler 300 to Ram). Ford has used it's  3.5 liter ecoboost for everything from the MKT to the F-150. So I doubt that Toyota will have any issues in using the twin turbo version of it's 3.5 liter V6 in the Tundra.

Yeah it's a very similar front end. I'm sure Toyota took note of the sales figures:

I’ll be disappointed with the power train announcements if there is no V8. I am expecting to be disappointed.  I want my truck powertrain to be fairly straightforward and reliable. No turbos please. I would be fine with a Toyota hybrid system.

Truck looks OK. Front grill is too much but we’ll see what the regular versions look like. As is the trend in trucks, it looks thick through the mid section. I saw a new Ford yesterday and think it’s the best looking of the pickups right now. I haven’t thought that of a Ford truck before. It looks great. A turbo Ford would be no dice for me however.

Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

^^^I think the only path for an existing Tundra owner to upgrade to a new Tundra is with a hybrid.  Bonus points if a PHEV Tundra Prime is offered.

^^ Or you know, with a big honkin DOHC V8 with 450hp and acceptable fuel economy.  ;D

I get what you’re saying though. Actually a smaller V8 hybrid with big hp with make me happy. I just really don’t want a V6 in a truck at this point. Love my V8.

I’d also prefer a hybrid over a turbo.

This. I would only buy a new one if it was hybrid, or totally EV.

The harsh reality is V8’s just won’t be used or developed going forward, especially for a company like Toyota who don’t sell that many to begin with.  At least with GM and Ford you have all those heavy and light duty pickup to spread the cost.

I don’t think the hybrid will be as reliable or last as long but It will more than make up for it with 50% less fuel costs.

There will be no V8 and the hybrid will be the top line engine from my understanding.

So I'm guessing more HP and TQ than the V6TT

But who knows

Lucky you! This will likely get the new Land Cruiser 3.5TT hybrid - 409 hp and 479lbft.

No PHEV…Toyota doesn’t have that powertrain.

No V8…the LC also abandoned it…

The biggest question though - will the hybrid be standard?

They have the tech and no-show to develop it, though, and it seems to be the direction they want to go.

Any guesses if they're gonna run a shaft to the rear axle or use a motor there?

It's a truck....

So yeah.  It'll for sure have a proper transfer case with front/rear differentials.  The electric motor will likely be sandwiched between the motor and transmission, or even between the transmission and transfer case.
