Quite the Schnoz on that one.

Probably aligns with current trends, but I don’t like it. At least not from these pictures.

Looks like the nose is too high, but that could be a TRD pro desert running thing

Too bad. I really had high hopes for the Tundra. The styling really doesn’t do anything for me, looks awkward and hodgepodge. And I’ve been liking the recent Toyota offerings too.

Here's the official photo.

Keep in mind..this is the TRD Pro. The normal trims will be a bit more tame apparently

That looks a bit better….tiny bit. Maybe the non-TRD models will look better. I think it’s the yuge grill that’s throwing the entire design off.

The black center piece of bumper under the grill doesn't help.  Maybe change that to body colour and it might look better?

I like it but I think we all should wait until the regular version comes out and then make our judgement.  The TRD Pro models are always over the top styled so I’m hopeful the regular one will be more tame.

What are people’s thoughts of the V6 turbo and the Hybrid?  I think it could be everything the Ford Ecoboost is not…reliable.

The blue accent of the "MAX" may suggest it is a hybrid. Hopefully a NA one.

Well if they change their 3.5L V6 to the more efficient cycle and add a couple of high power electric motors, could easily be combined 350+hp and 350+ torque, which wouldn’t be the most capable in their lineup but would likely be the most efficient none EV gas pickup.

I wonder if Toyota would ever put the hybrid system out of the Highlander and Sienna into the Tacoma.

^^^ They already have the 3.5 V6 hybrid as found in the RX. Bumping up its output to 350hp and beyond should be possible, if their 2.5L hybrid powertrains are any indicator. Currently they range from 219hp in the Rav4h and Venza to 239hp in the Sienna and Highlander to around 300hp iirc in the Rav4 Prime, all from the same exact engine.

They NEED to be 450+hp to be competitive with Ford at this point.  If they're going to increase market share of the Tundra, they need to beat Ford at everything, including power, towing, payload, and tech.  Otherwise, what's the point of waiting 15 years between models?

I disagree, it just needs to have Toyota reliability. 15 years? That is easily the service life of the Tundra so it makes sense. Not sure I would want to be left holding the bag on a 15 YO eco bomb.  Not sure I would want to be left holding the bag on all this whiz bang hybrid crap either.

When the previous gen Tundra came out in 2007, Toyota looked at the benchmarks at the time, and exceeded all the metrics I mentioned.  That generation of Tundra hauled more, towed more, and was more powerful, courtesy of the all new 5.7L V8.  It was THE benchmark for half-tons.  Then a couple of years later, all the other manufacturers released new generations of their trucks and the Tundra was left behind.  Literally the ONLY thing the Tundra had going for it after that was stellar reliability.  Over the last decade and a half, all the other half tons got better and better, while the Tundra remained at its mid 2000's capabilities.

Once again, Toyota finds itself in the position where it can see what the other manufacturers are doing, and potentially beat them, at least for a little bit.  I'm not saying Toyota needs to surpass them so much that they'll hold a commanding lead for years to come, but they at least need to 'beat' the current generation of trucks, so that they can be somewhat competitive over the next decade and a half that they'll offer this half ton.

Why are you quoting 450+hp?  Only the TRX, and Raptor engines (I know that is also in the fancy f150) exceed that.  Everyone else is 420hp or less.  I agree it needs to be competitive but I think it’s likely more important to have the right tuning, chassis, and materials (reduce weight and increase stiffness).  That turbo V6 in the Landcruiser and LS makes over 400 already so it won’t be hard to meet that 420 benchmark but the torque is more important for capability.

I don’t know if the Hybrid will be more or less capable than the turbo V6.

You say they haven’t changed in 15 years but they sell everyone they make easily and not with huge incentives like the domestics.  I don’t think they are looking to be number one seller but maybe keep their number one profit margin per truck title.

High Output version of the 3.5EB in the platinum had 450hp.  The PowerBoost Hybrid is up there as well.  430, I think.

To compare:. In 2006, the top Ford engine (5.4L) made 310hp.  The Hemi in the Ram made 345hp, as did the 5.3 in the Silverado.  When Toyota released the 5.7, it upped power to a class leading 381hp.

I'm not saying the base engine in the Tundra should be 450hp, but they should certainly hit at least that benchmark with their top hybrid option.
