Hyundai Says The New Santa Cruz Is NOT A Pickup Truck

It's not a truck; it's a Sport Adventure Vehicle.

https://carbuzz.com/news/hyundai-says-the-new-santa-cruz-is-not-a-pickup-truck

Got to hand it to the Koreans.  They just keep on getting better.  Santa Cruz has a factory installed steel roller tonneau with key lock standard.  Starts @ $40K.

Would say the Maverick was developed as a (small) truck, with the fancy cargo bed, 1500 lbs cargo capacity and all. The Santa Cruz was always aimed at being a Brat type vehicle

I'm still impressed by how Maverick and Santa Cruz manage to have up to 1500 and 1600 lb of payload respectively while Tacoma has 1090 to 1280 lb of payload capacity depending on trim level.

Yeah that's what impressed me the most about both the Maverick and Santa Cruz.  I guess I don't keep track of payloads in pickups because at first glace 1,500 lbs doesn't seem like much, but then you look at some of the midsize and even full size capacities and you realize just how impressive it is.

Yea. 1500-1600 lb is half ton territory. I think Tacoma is just an anamoly as Canyonrado and Ranger both have up to 1600 lb payload.

Ram 1500 and Tundra have pretty low payload as well. The new Tundra will have up to 1940 lb payload. Technically half ton but you look at Sierrado and F150 which can be optioned to up to 2400 lb of payload which is one ton territory.

Tacoma is probably using as soft as springs as they can get away with to improve the ride quality up on the ancient design.

Actually, the Tacoma Sport is just under 1500 lbs.  The Off Road, and Pro are less given they have off road intended suspensions (i.e. softer).

Do they sell that in Canada? I don't see that trim or payload number on toyota.ca

Official EPA fuel economy numbers stated for the Hybrid version.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a38017782/ford-maverick-hybrid-42-mpg-epa-city-fuel-economy/

So that works out to a combined rating of just under 7L/100kms and under 6L/100kms for the city.  Still able to carry 1,500 pounds in the bed, I could see this trim level being a real great trade persons truck.  Heck even being able to tow 2,000lbs is likely enough for a small aluminum enclosed trailer with all their tools and supplies.

I think this truck is going to be very popular on the roads.

If this test is any indication, that's very likely

If I were buying a new vehicle today I'd be at a crossroads between my die-hard manual transmission stance and getting this, which would be way more practical for my lifestyle.

I'd probably still get the same 6MT golf sportwagen 4motion if it were available new, but I'd be VERY torn.

I haven't actually seen one on the road yet. Must get down to my local dealers and have a look. Ford .ca finally shows some in inventory locally. Most are 4wd Xlt's though. If I was buying one now I 'd choose the hybrid.

Ford has already stated the hybrid is delayed a good 6 months.  So all the ones that we will see locally will have the 2.0T AWD models, likely a lot of XLT's with some top trim and a handful of base models.  They do look like a proper compact truck, just wish they would have given it a bit more bed, I'm thinking 6 footer would have been ideal.

Waiting for the recall in 3....2....1....
Oh no doubt there will be some kind of recall, but that won't stop sales.  Seeing as this uses the Escape platform and engines, you would hope that there won't be too many issues with the rollout.

i can see the lower trim Hybrid being popular as a fleet vehicle...it's perfect for a lot of light duty use, and the hybrid system will provide ongoing fuel savings.

According to the Ford .ca inventory site there is an XLT hybrid about 1 hour away from me in Bridgewater.

Nope. Not much sense putting something in your inventory if you don't have it.

If I didn't need the towing capacity I'd seriously consider something like the Maverick Hybrid, once prices and inventory get settled down of course.  Love my Frontier but not so much the 14.1L/100km avg mileage.

It'll be interesting if Toyota/Ford/GM bring out a hybrid option in the next generation Taco/Ranger/Colorado.

Yeah, won't be making any fleet changes for the next couple of years anyway so lots of time to see what comes up between now and then.  Was mulling over replacing the GS-350 next year but it's still a great drive so doubt that will happen.
