TFL's first look at the Ioniq 5:

I disagree with the kid about the 1st gen Tucson though  ;)
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

AoA first drive and detailed review of the Ioniq 5:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cI3zBof7AA

AoA: "The ride quality is probably the most impressive thing for me about the Ioniq 5"

A heat pump seems to be limited to the AWD models.

800V DC charging: 68 miles of range can be added in 5 minutes  8)

Overall H appears to have done a solid job with this EV.

Looks nice, but the proportions are all off. It's like someone took a normally sized 4 door hatchback and zoomed it to 125%.
I love it when a plan comes together.

So it's a big mac hatch made for Americans?  :P

P.S. Instead of a classic SUV shape having it with low ground clearance and overall low height greatly improves the car's aerodynamics which is a simple and cheap way to increase highway mileage. I'm looking forward to the Hyundai's electric sedan but so far, among the latest mass market EVs, this is my favourite design.

Agree it looks good, but I don't think it necessarily has low ground clearance and height. All the pics and videos with people standing beside this thing, and it does not look small.

It's wider but shorter than my Venza. However the wheelbase is longer IIRC and the ground clearance and height in question are (ioniq vs venza) 6.1" to 7.7" and 63.1" to 66"

Being designed an EV from the ground up, I think it has advantages in cabin space and cargo volume while the trunk hood is shorter.

At the Throttle House. One of the hosts is considering trading in his S4 for it.

Likely some accessory light left on. I'd imagine engineers who design electric cars would know how to keep a 12v battery charged  ;)

But they don’t. Seem to be the #1 issue with EV’s for some odd reason. My son just replaced the original battery in his 9 year old Kia Rio so go figure..  ???

That's just strange (the EVs' 12V battery issue). I suppose in an ICE car (with exception of hybrids) every time the key is turned on, the alternator is running, so basically the 12V battery can charge whenever it wants to. What is the case with EVs? Do they charge the 12V battery only when connected to 120/240V or can they use their traction battery for this purpose?

On my Mach-E the 12V is charged when the car is connected to 120 or 240 and from the main battery when driving.

All EVs have a DC to DC converter, to convert High voltage (~ 400V or so) to Low voltage side (12V)
Since car keep some load active (cell comm, remote, etc), the 12V battery still monitor (* Note: when EV is recharging, the main DC contactor has to be close to allow current flow thru to the high voltage battery, otherwise if not running, it should be open to isolate from the HV battery) if required from time to time but I'm not aware of all fine details and may vary widely from one manufacturer to another...

Same YTuber, having problems with his e-Niro dead 12 Volt battery https://youtu.be/CRMNKi84_yw?t=260 has a battery monitor plugged into OBD port (which potentially kill the battery), to check activity level maintain while at rest.
His battery replaced under warranty, check about the update https://youtu.be/oZi5q20ND1Y?t=123

Edit to annotate about  DC contactor (isolation purpose) status at rest, charging or not.

Ioniq 5 under the hood (Munro Live)

Looks like the absence of an ICE have created vacant space under the hood. There is a small frunk and curiously enough, the cabin air filter has made its way here too.

I must have missed the "vacant space" under the hood. At least in that video.   ???

Things don't look as tightly packed as in my car even though the hood is shorter. They've found space for a removable frunk and a cabin air filter. More things could be added perhaps.

That's not a "frunk". A frunk is a trunk in the front. Like my Boxster or 911. See images.

The Hyundai has a "front storage box" at best.

Ok, try the Ioniq and report back  :P

That box may not be huge, but it's in addition to the main cargo space of the hatch. I'm sure future models will be able to free up even more space under the hood due to more compact drivetrain components and more efficient packaging. Hyundai along with many other traditional automakers are currently rushing to stake the electric market share; refinements will follow.
