DriverJeff's new //M
« on: April 29, 2021, 04:53:29 pm »
For those who've been taggin' along in the "What Toy Would You Buy for $20k" thread, you'll know I've been actively looking to replace last summer's Boxster, and I'm pleased to report a new toy is on its way!

I looked at a few Vettes, I drove a few Porsches (944S and another Boxster), but a deal has been struck for a 2000 BMW M Roadster.  It appears to be a well-maintained machine purchased from a fastidious owner.  In fact, you guys may know him...

 ;D

Shortly after the "What Toy... " thread was initiated, KD reached out and said he might be selling his M Roadster and wondered if I'd be interested.  While my rapidly-expanding scalp made me prefer to go for a coupe this year, KD's M Roadster simply fit too many of my very picky criteria to pass up and we came to terms.

Thanks to the all the COVID restrictions (most troublesome of which is the Maritime Bubble), it meant not being able to hop a quick and cheap flight to NB to retrieve my new baby and drive home with an absolutely mandatory stop at CanuckS2k's place ( https://www.hrbrewing.ca ) , and instead, having the car shipped back to Ontario (without and Hammond River suds  :'(

Today, the car sits in rail lot purgatory near Toronto, and I'm still waiting impatiently for the okay to go and retrieve it (KD fit a GPS tracker in it so I could monitor its progress).  I feel like a kid perpetually stuck in the day before Christmas, looking at all the gifts under the tree, but being able to open any of them.

Making such a sizeable purchase, site-unseen during a global pandemic from someone I've never met, two provinces over has not been without stresses (and indeed, many could question the sanity of this endeavour), but KD did everything possible to help set my mind at ease.

By everything I've read (and believe me, it's been volumes!), I can't wait to experience the raw-ness of this little beasty.  Cars these days are too big, too heavy and too sterile, so a toy that celebrates the way sports cars used to be (a bit crude, a bit unruly, and downright gorgeous to look at) should fit the bill.

And, since this is a Show n' Shine, here are some pics:

Congrats! Fantastic little toy, enjoy every corner!  :skid:

Too funny as KD sent me some videos of him doing 5K clutch drops last week in that car  ;D

Awesome purchase of an awesome car. I'm sure KD babied that thing so it should be great. This would be my second favourite next to the Z4M but I'm sure those aren't going for cheap right now.

Enjoy!

Great choice, congrats!

Can't wait to get a ride.

Nice buy! I've seen the car in the flesh, back in the summer 2019, it's a sweet ride!

So, the cat's outta the bag now.  ;D   I only hope it arrived unscathed.   I'm sure I was as nervous as Jeff was about this process.    :P

The car shows really well too.  The silver paint sparkles nicely but doesn't show up well in photos, at least not my photos.  Always looks kind of milky compared to in-the-flesh. Nothing grey looking about that colour.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and can't wait to hear your impressions.

Btw, I was organizing my car care products yesterday and noticed I had almost a full can of Ragg Topp left over.  I meant to throw it in the trunk before shipping.  Hopefully that's the only thing i forgot.  ;D

Nice to see it passed along, congrats!  I would have loved to see my 350Z go to someone here, rather than likely off to the auction.

The question now is, what are you going to replace this with?  Are we going to get another fun car search thread started soon?

Seriously though, I was driving it less and less all the time.  Only did about 1K last year and I hate to let it sit around.  If we do decide to get another fun car it will likely be something a little bigger and that the wife can drive.  Think I've scratched the roadster itch, for now anyway.
