For those who've been taggin' along in the "What Toy Would You Buy for $20k" thread, you'll know I've been actively looking to replace last summer's Boxster, and I'm pleased to report a new toy is on its way!
I looked at a few Vettes, I drove a few Porsches (944S and another Boxster), but a deal has been struck for a 2000 BMW M Roadster. It appears to be a well-maintained machine purchased from a fastidious owner. In fact, you guys may know him...
Shortly after the "What Toy... " thread was initiated, KD reached out and said he might be selling his M Roadster and wondered if I'd be interested. While my rapidly-expanding scalp made me prefer to go for a coupe this year, KD's M Roadster simply fit too many of my very picky criteria to pass up and we came to terms.
Thanks to the all the COVID restrictions (most troublesome of which is the Maritime Bubble), it meant not being able to hop a quick and cheap flight to NB to retrieve my new baby and drive home with an absolutely mandatory stop at CanuckS2k's place (
https://www.hrbrewing.ca ) , and instead, having the car shipped back to Ontario (without and Hammond River suds
.
Today, the car sits in rail lot purgatory near Toronto, and I'm still waiting impatiently for the okay to go and retrieve it (KD fit a GPS tracker in it so I could monitor its progress). I feel like a kid perpetually stuck in the day before Christmas, looking at all the gifts under the tree, but being able to open any of them.
Making such a sizeable purchase, site-unseen during a global pandemic from someone I've never met, two provinces over has not been without stresses (and indeed, many could question the sanity of this endeavour), but KD did everything possible to help set my mind at ease.
By everything I've read (and believe me, it's been volumes!), I can't wait to experience the raw-ness of this little beasty. Cars these days are too big, too heavy and too sterile, so a toy that celebrates the way sports cars used to be (a bit crude, a bit unruly, and downright gorgeous to look at) should fit the bill.
And, since this is a Show n' Shine, here are some pics:
