But it really sounds like they’ve upped their AWD game with the MK8. MK7 R was more GT road car, and kinda fell flat for track use or hard driving. MK8 has the trick new Haldex with torque-vectoring that makes a real difference.

At least, that’s the impression I’ve got from the reviews I’ve read.

I wouldn't want one for track use, but rather as an all weather capable, fun DD.

Car and Driver has referred to Matt Farah in the past - he is well known tool in the industry.

Fixed.

Hey, you don’t even like the R.  What are you doing here?

Reminding you that Matt Farah is a tool?    :rofl2:

I don't mind the Golf R....just prefer the Audi version with the I5!   ;D
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Were any of those 4000 VW group cars heading to Rhode Island that sunk GTIs?   or do German cars from Germany go straight to the Canadian east coast?

Yeah, AWD is not my first choice for track use either. But it really sounds like driving dynamics of the new R are much improved over the old one.

Again, just my impression from what I’ve read, but the old one felt kind of heavy and dull while the new one feels spry and lithe (for a 3,500 lb car  :P .)

I’d have chosen the GTI over the R every time up until now, but the MK8 has me thinking maybe the R is now worth the extra dough.

Not to derail a thread  :), but a Comrade of mine is buying a 2022 GTI base for his wife in auto.  He was fretting over the ship sinking.  Wonder if she knows about the insane radio and HVAC controls  ???  Really bad.  Otherwise great car.

Well I assume that the ship was coming from Germany and the number of vehicles that VW make and Germany and sell in NA are fairly low.  The GTI, Golf R, probably their EV's, the Arteon.  But I think all their CUV's are made in either US or Mexico, and same with Jetta's.  So likely a lot of people will be waiting for their hot hatch.

Ouch.

I have been reading a lot of mixed reviews to be frank - lifeless steering, sterile, and of course the interior.

You realize that "lifeless steering" and "sterile" are common in the industry now.  The interior is for sure a big negative in my book.  From what I can tell from reviews, if you want the fastest Golf R you get the DSG, if you want the most engaging Golf R you get the manual.

Yeah, I thought so. I know it wasn’t for a bit (maybe the MK6 R?) but thought a stick has been available for quite a while.

Not sure what to make of that last review, but tbh I only watched a couple minutes. Looked like they were driving at 6/10ths down some nice roads. Didn’t really listen to what they had to say.

I’ll put more stock in reviews from places like Car and Driver. Sounds like the car handled the Lightning Lap really well. I’m sure I’d absolutely hate all the capacitive touch nonsense, but not sure yet if it’s a deal breaker.
The MK6 was available only with a manual I think.  The only one that was DSG only that I can remember is the MK5 R32 Golf that had the VR6, but I don't think that was even sold in Canada.  Prior to that there was a MK4 R32 that was sold in limited numbers that had a manual.

Common?  Veloster N, Type R and Civic Si, Mazda Miata, Camaro...  none of these performance cars have lifeless steering.
All the Germans have this issue.  The only German vehicles that don't feel sterile and have a good feeling steering all come from Porsche and even those you need to go up the trim ladder.

Since the switch from hydraulic to electronic steering the "lifeless steering" has been pretty much common (talking generally, not just performance vehicles).

It seems my Golf R  may be on a ship this week, to Halifax by the 21st March.  Then a month(!) to get it to TO and another week or two to the dealer.    All this dates are estimated although the ship leaving Emden has been firm for a while.

I will believe it when the dealer calls me with a VIN.

That’s great news and might get her right when the weather is changing and you can avoid having to put winter tires on.

Not just the electric power assist, the lane keeping stuff on many cars doesn't help.  I have mine turned off, just can't stand it.

Called in at the dealer this Tuesday morning and my car should be at the dealer a day or two  after Easter.   It is at Ajax which I gather is VW's collection point for sw ont vehicles.
I ordered the car with  a cash deposit on July 15th last year.

This car from order to next week has been delayed by:
Pandemic phases 2,3,4.
Supply chains for chips
supply chains for wiring harnesses.
Delay as cars with no sunroofs de-prioritized on production line.
A war
And finally a religious holiday.

But I missed the price increase.
No HST rise in the budget
Spring seems to have arrived so don't have to but winter tires for a bit.

Oh well.  All I have to do now is to do a show and tell....maybe I can just copy Patrick_D1's photos.

Sweet!
Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.
