I don't think age is a factor.  I remember driving a first gen Mazda3 and thought it was a huge step back in the fun dept. vs the Protege.  Better in every other metric I'm sure, but way less fun.

The first gen Mazda 3 was a huge step forward for compact cars. They kind of followed what VW had done with the MkIV Jetta and Golf in terms of the levels of refinement and amenities that were brought to that class. But you're right, the Protege was just so much more fun. Our Protege5 was definitely one of the most fun cars we've ever had.

What a world we live in.

Where I live my GTI with a +1 tune was way too fast for public roads and I still find I can't use all the Rolla's power because people are in my way. Back highways have police hidden in bushes waiting to impound your car and freeways are clogged with transports trucks.  Just yesterday there was a 20 km backup on the 401 at 7AM which didn't involve and accident or bad weather, just a lane closed for construction.

I've lost interest 0-100 kph numbers and would rather a slower car that offers much more feedback than power. I'd take this (ignore the price) over many new cars.

See, like your 'Rolla, I keep telling myself that the NA2.0 in my 3 is 'enough' - and it is.  It keeps up with traffic plenty fine, although it could use a little more 'ooomph' down low when trying to merge into faster moving traffic at a yield - but then the front tires would just be overwhelmed and it wouldn't accelerate any faster than it already does.

Where I really think it could use more power is in the midrange.  The NA2.0 is missing that 'point and squirt' torque curve that something with a small turbo would have.

This is where I think Mazda has a winner in the Mazda3 AWD with the 2.5T.  It's not a powerhouse up top, but has that massive, fat torque curve right in the middle, exactly where you want it for point and squirt maneuvers in traffic.  It's not about 'outright speed', but rather responsiveness and willingness, let's say.

I think 'responsiveness and willingness' is exactly where the Golf R would shine.  Yeah, it has the ability (and power) to go very, very fast, but when you get down to it, that wondrous 2.0T has enough grunt to pull hard no matter what gear you're in.  And the AWD would be a massive boon when trying to enter a small space in traffic from a dig.  Who needs to wait for a break in traffic when you have enough power and traction to make your own space?

100% this. This is why I love light cars with less power, they are much more involving. And why I find off-road riding so enjoyable.

Anyone know if the backup camera is hidden behind the pop out rear hatch handle?  I liked that on my old Golf R and I miss it with my current GLI which is exposed and all winter I'm wiping it off.  Oh and are there front headlight washers?

It sure looks like it is.  I can't imagine they'd move away from it.  Agreed that it's a great feature.

Yes, it still pops out from the badge in the Golf. On some of our other models where the lens is exposed (i.e. Tiguan, Atlas), there's also a washer nozzle right on the camera lens to keep it clean.

I was just telling my wife about that VW trick, as she was backing up in her Fit and couldn't see damned thing through the dirty camera.

Negative. Slowly being phased out of the industry. With LED lights now common-place, headlight washers can cause headaches in extreme cold because the fluid freezes - the lights don't generate enough heat to melt it.

That's too bad I liked that feature on my old Golf R, but not a big deal.

Ouch..https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2021/12/report-every-new-vw-golf-has-been-recalled-in-germany/
This is going to become more and more common with the amount of tech they put in cars.  My GLI has been flawless so far 18 months in and it has a digital cluster and all the safety tech, so not sure what is going on with the new Golfs/VWs.

Our Tiguan is starting to have some electrical issues, just intermittent ones that are hard to diagnose. So 2/3 VW's with issues for us.

Yeah, and unfortunately no manufacturer is immune to faulty/glitchy software... We learned (or should've learned) there is no such thing as perfect software well before complex softwares started to run our cars...

I think it is the haptic controls.  The ID4 has had issues as well.  You should be just fine because the MK7.5 had a similar dash and I don’t remember reading about issues with that.
They didn’t learn a thing from Ford’s Sync touch everywhere LOL….

Hmmmm.  This might mean 2 things to me.     1.  My Golf R will be delayed further.   2. When it does arrive it will have updated and better software.

Or... 3. I will have given up on it and bought a Tesla

Yes, because when you're frustrated with long lead times and a company's inability to fix common problems, Tesla is exactly the company to go running to!  :rofl2:
