I ordered one this morning.    Blue, DSG, no sunroof.

If the ID4 had a known delivery in Canada decision may have been different.  The only dealer for the ID4 around  wasn't sure when they would even get one for people to loo  at and touch let alone buy.

Congratulations! ID.4 timing is tough due to the extremely high global demand, plus challenges with semi-conductor shortages. Order book already extends well into 2022 here in Canada.

As for the R, nice spec. My incoming unit is also Lapiz Blue, with three pedals and the sunroof. As mine will be one of the first off the boat and I'll have it a few weeks before any show up in dealers, I'll be sure to do a thorough show & shine.

Congrats man, can't wait to see the show and shine.  I'm assuming this will replace the Volvo?

Congrats as well!! Same question, Volvo replacement?

So in real life a new GTI should get closer to 680kms on a tank.

Maybe if you name is Kramer  :P :rofl2:

Also, lets just use one source for f/e numbers as driving in NB is nothing like crossing the GTA with regards to efficiency. I got my numbers from fueleconomy.gov.

My 2009 is rated 8.1 hwy and the 2021 is 7.4 but I have a 55L tank vs the 50L now. Lets just pretend the 2022 get 7.2 hwy.

Leaving 10L in the tank because you don't take chances in the mountains.

2009 = 555 km
2021 = 540 km
2022 = 555 km

Even leaving just 5L in the tank

2009 = 617 km
2021 = 608 km
2022 = 625 km

Add in headwinds, bikes, roof box, horrible traffic, accidents, and it only gets worse. Sure one can take the 407 around GTA but you tend to drive faster (130 vs 120) to drop $40 each way for the convenience.
Yeah I wasn't sure what size tank yours has, so it has a full 5L more, which means the new GTI would have to be 10% more fuel efficient in order to go the same distance.  In that case I don't see the difference being enough for you to even notice.  So if your main goal is distance until having to refuel, the GTI won't be the one to achieve that goal.

I would however like to see what other options you'd consider that would extend your travels on one tank in a noticeable way.  From what I can gather most vehicles targets are around the same distance traveled per tank, not many left out there that give you the 1,000kms like the old TDI's.

I don't think there are any cars in the GTI/R group that can do it. Going outside that group so far I have found the Camry (4cyl) and Prius Prime.

Camry has a 60L take and is rated 5.7 hwy = 877 km (leaving 10L in the tank) or 964 km (with 5L left).
Even though the PP has a smaller tank it does get better f/e so it should do similar numbers.
That's the problem, finding a fun car that can go more than what your current GTI does is going to be tough.  Just did a quick little look to see if there might be something fun that would fit the bill and the two that come to mind are the Mercedes C Class wagon, but the non AMG one, has a tank of 66L and a highway fuel economy number of 7.5L/100kms, so if my math is right that's roughly 880kms on a tank.  The other one is the Volvo V60, which also gets around 870kms on a full tank of gas.

Yes, the MB and Volvo wagons would make for great choices but are also a class and dollars above. Still a good find. Because I just randomly look at many cars (which I'm sure most of us also do) I have noticed that the Porsche Cayenne (90L), Panamera (90L) and Lexus LS460 (84L) should be able to break out 750-800 km hwy trips.

Good prices all around.

You upgrading?   :)

Upgrading? If i wanted a Golf I would have kept it.

But... a 2022 GTI would be considered an upgrade  ;D

Meh, it's still a Golf. I've got way too many cars I want to try before buying what I used to have.

I started looking through this thread, thinking maybe a Golf R would be a good choice for next car then remembered.. I just had one.  It was an awesome car but.... so many cars so little time to drive them.

Pricing is out:

$31,495 GTI | +$1,350 for 18" wheels, sunroof
$34,995 GTI Autobahn | +$1,800 for 19" wheels, sunroof, harman/kardon audio
$38,995 GTI Performance | +$1,250 for sunroof, +$0 for leather delete (i.e. go back to cloth)
+$1,400 on all for DSG

$44,995 for Golf R | +$1,250 for sunroof
+$1,400 for DSG

They. Are. Going. To. SELL.  ;D

Fantastic pricing!! Very aggressive. I think adding an R to the GTI now seems distinctly likely as soon as they hit the showrooms.

A couple of things.
I don't need a big car any more.
A last fast car before the years with a wheelchair seems a good plan.  OR of course the electric cars will be in good supply in a few years.
I am sure because of the limited supply it will be worth something even if I trade it after 3 years.   It will be a low mileage one when I sell it.
I like the Golf thing, I owned 3 GTIs.
Local dealer, I dealt with their service depot for 5 years and they do good enough work.

I have not decided whether to keep the Volvo and only drive the R in good weather.   I am thinking about that.   The Volvo IS a good winter car  ( and paid for of course)

Possible problems.
That lower 'hip'  height  may be a problem as I get even creakier.

I expect it to arrive just in time for needing winter tires which would be another reason to keep the Volvo at least until spring.  I will be checking whether 17" rims will fit, the dealer says they will  which would mean a better choice of snow tires.

With the AWD capability...it seems such a waste to park it in the winter.

I'd drive it year round!

It appears 17"wheels fit   which  give a reasonable choice of winter tires.

I was astonished at the traction in IQs A5 on 19s...

And I ran 18s on my ISF.

I personally think the R will get through winter weather on any tire size.

I owned a Golf R for 5 years and drove it in the winter, it was an excellent winter car, and I would assume the new one would be even better.  Definitely a shame to park it for the winter.

The lower "hip" height might be an issue though, these cars are quite low, and will feel quite a bit lower than your Fit. But like you said, even if you only keep it for a couple of years you'll recoup most of your money.  These hold their value very well.

Lastly, I'm socked that 17" rims will fit on them.  I thought they put bigger brakes on this new generation and the old generation could just fit 17's on, and even then some 17's didn't fit.  But if so that's great news.

Also don't forget about the ingress/egress. Even with my 2009 GTI I have many people complain about how far it is to get into the seat plus the bolsters are annoying to get over. The new seats look even more bolstered than mine (I have the sport seats) so something else to think about.

Personally I'd drive it all winter with 18's. If I'm correct, it isn't like you need to be anywhere so if the weather is that bad, just stay home and read a book. Plus when it does snow, most of the time the roads are clear the next day.

I ordered one this morning.    Blue, DSG, no sunroof.

If the ID4 had a known delivery in Canada decision may have been different.  The only dealer for the ID4 around  wasn't sure when they would even get one for people to loo  at and touch let alone buy.
Congrats Tim!

I really wish these were offered in more colours. The blue is nice, but c'mon, just three colours?

If you had a choice of colours in the VW catalogue what would you choose?  The blue is pretty nice and likely the best color of the R.  But there are a couple of other colours that I would have loved to have seen.  I liked that green that they offered on the Jetta a couple of years ago, it's was like a forest green.  The other color that I'd love to make a resurgence is from waaaay back in 2007 when they made a limited edition GTI called the fahrenheit, I'm sure you remember it, that orange is sweet.

I'm not so sure 17s will fit the new R. They still fit the GTI, but according to my official specs, the larger front brakes on the new R require 18" minimum due to the bigger 357 mm rotors. That doesn't mean there isn't some aftermarket option out there with crazy backspacing that might squeeze over, but I'm doubtful.

That sounds about right.  I have 17 inch VW winter alloys on my Golf R and GLI (same brakes as the R) and it just fits.  So unless VW shaved some material off the caliper I doubt 17's will fit the new R.  I'd plan for 18's just to be safe.

Yeah that colour is great. I'm down for any sort of bright green or orange colours, or even purple.
