MK8 R vs MK7 R

it's quick, that's for sure...to paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson "That Golf R just :censor: off".  ;D

i agree though, i think VW is sandbagging the numbers a bit...the guy driving the older Golf R mentioned the torque, but i think the difference is HP...they are similar off the line (the new one seems to launch a little faster, and there may be a bit more torque), but the difference widens at speed, which would be HP...i wouldn't be surprised if this is putting 320HP to the wheels (if not a bit more).

For sure.  Given the quarter mile time, that proves out the hp.

Which 1/4 mile times?

What are they?

I did the calculations for the GTI and it's only making ~15HP more than advertised based on trap speed.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I don’t have speeds but 12.2 to 12.3 in the quarter so the performance isn’t just at the launch.  I have to think at least 112 mph.

Top speed is 172 mph

Thoughts?

12.2@112 puts the crank HP at ~358

And we are seeing dynos at around 350 at the crank.
would that equate to around 320 at the wheels then?

I wonder if I should just go and order a Golf R   ( no sunroof and a DSG)

Is it just me, or is that expensive for a sunroof on a ~$30k vehicle?

I guess the only thing that we can ask for now is a couple more colour choices for the R.  Otherwise you guys did an amazing job on packaging and pricing.  If I wasn't big game hunting for my next vehicle I would definitely be considering them.

The numbers do look good to me, the packaging not so much, but it might just be me. Lots (perhaps younger people with strong backs that haven't spent years damaging themselves going kart racing/trail riding etc.  :'(  ) seem to like the small aspect ratio/rubber band and punishing ride that takes place in most locales north of the Mason Dixon line, which is the gift that keeps on giving with the 19's. Packaging those, which I don't want, with the luxury bits - sunroof and upscale audio, seems off. My GLi with 45 aspect ratio and Dynamic Chassis Control is perfect for our roads, IMO.

We might have to think about consolidating the two threads? Maybe changing the subject to be GTi and R? Dunno, maybe better still, have a thread for the GTi and this for the R?

I can't pry my wife's hands from the Elantra GT, she still loves it. Of course I want to replace it with a GTi or R for devious selfish reasons..... VW is trying to create marital problems here!   :o

He he, upgrade to anything is the problem!

Actually this isn't a hatchback, which gives the visibility and smaller size. The N is a more powerful version of the Elantra Sport I owned before.

Yea, that's like IQ.

She isn't ever going to sell her IS300.

And that's fine.

I've only owned one car I've liked that much.....and I made the mistake of selling it.

Nice. So I can still get a GTI with a manual, 17” rims, cloth and no sunroof. My 2010 spec’d that way was $29,800, IIRC, so the new one for $31,495 seems a pretty good deal.

Still, I’m not super excited about the MK8. Kind of feel like I should do something different for my next car, but guess we’ll see. I may just end up with another one if I chicken out on a new BRZ.

Good prices all around.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

Just wondering why you want to know the fuel tank size?  Do you find that you can't get quite enough range out of your GTI?
