Which would you get?
« on: March 02, 2021, 09:37:26 am »
This may be a tough question since scooters don't get a lot of love in here, but if you were, which one would you pick:

A) Brand new 2020 Suzuki Bergman
B) Demo model 2019 BMW C400GT

The BWM would be a bit cheaper, it's only got 1456 kms on it and does have some factory warranty.  The Suzuki is new and has a 5 year factory warranty.  The BMW demo is right around the corner from me, so it would be easy to sit on and be sure it is comfortable (I have and it is).  I can't seem to find the Suzuki in stock anywhere close to sit on it.  I will have to assume it is fine, but it would be nice to see one in person.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

as a quick follow up, the BMW dealer also has a new unit, which is also discounted, so it isn't too much more than the Suzuki unit (which is also new)...i like the fact that the BMW is close by and has one to sit on to make sure i like it...i like the Suzuki as it has a 5 year warranty and is known to be of good quality and cheap to run...the Suzuki also has a monoshock rear suspension (i assume that is better?).

i called my insurance company to inquire on insurance rates and both are the same price to insure (figured they would be, but wanted to double check)...$464/year full coverage (likely overkill, but the price difference to drop down wasn't much savings).

BMW is a little better looking but the Suzuki probably has much better running costs. Presumably if buying new you are planning to hold on for a good time so on that basis I'd vote for Suzuki.

As you likely know, Ron has owned both a BMW and Suzuki , if I'm not mistaken.  Although, not the new models.  I'm sure he'd be more than happy to give his opinion.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

looks like there is now a sale pending on the used BMW, so that option might be out...it might be down to new vs new now.

wish the dealers in town had the Suzuki on the floor to sit on. :(

Burgman 400 is my pick.

If it was the 650 class, then BMW.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

i'm wondering if both of these scooters are on the way out...the BMW is a 2019 model (don't see a newer one) and the Suzuki is a 2020 model (there is no 2021 or 2022 model)...i don't know if that means there is a new one on the horizon (for either) or if this is the last we'll see of them (when they're gone, they're gone).

yes...but it looks like it's done (at least in NA)...it's not part of the 2021 or 2022 line up...it would be nice to know if there's a replacement in the works or if it's done...i'd kind of hate to get one, then find out two months later there's a new version that is maybe better.

^ Ask Suzuki Canada
good idea...i just sent them a message...hopefully they can answer my questions (sometimes they aren't allowed to answer availability of products if certain things are in the works but not "officially announced").

On occasion, if they still have a healthy supply of the previous year or two model, they won't have a model listed for the current year.

which makes sense...if they committed to 500 Burgman 400s for the 2020 model year and still have 250 sitting in their warehouse, they may pass on bringing in a 2021 model...if that's the case, it's fine with me (they are giving a no charge 5 year warranty on it right now)...i'd just hate to decide based on one of them, only to see a 2022 model coming a month later with heated grips and seat, smartkey and TFT screen.

Heated grips are a dealer installed option...no biggie there.

But I had heard that there were rumors of Suzuki not knowing whether to continue on with the Burgman line...or go in a new direction.  All this because of the Euro5 emission standard.

Even so...there's no guarantee a "new" Burgman (or its replacement) would make it here for a few years at least.  IMO of course.  Scooters are usually 1-2 years out for us AFTER they are introduced in Europe.

yea, on the Suzuki Canada website, they list the heated grips and handguards as "out of stock", which makes me wonder if they are done with them altogether...i've looked on a few Euro Suzuki websites and it seems the Burgman stops at the 2020 model so i have a feeling they may be on their way out...like you said, likely going with a new Euro 5 version to replace it, but not sure if it will make here since i know scooters don't exactly sell in huge numbers.

do you still have your BMW scooter?

this whole "mock" thing is a North American issue...i've owned a scooter before, it was one of the best bikes i've owned.

i'd certainly love a new Indian Chief Dark Horse, but those are over $20k...the scooter is cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure and cheap on fuel...it's also got weather protection, storage and lots of comfort...i bolded the points that are important for what i want...as a commuter, it's way better than any "real, smaller displacement bike" would be...there's a few people in here who have (or had scooters)...once you own one, you get it.

Wouldn't a BMW 310GS with some bolt on accessories be a much nicer bike for the same price?

And tick all of your boxes.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

how is it nicer??

for one, adventure bikes aren't my style (for me personally)...secondly, i don't see how that would be any better at the points i bolded.
