^^The 1998 GS400 was quicker to 60, 1/4 mile, braked better and was .87-.9 on the skidpad.  And this is a large car to boot.  https://www.motortrend.com/news/1998-lexus-gs-300-1998-motor-trend-import-car-of-the-year/

-An IS350, Infiniti G, BMW 335, 2 Series, etc)...or any luxury sedan from the mid 2000s will put up similar/better numbers.

-A plain old 2009 WRX will put up those numbers.

Those are just off the top of my head.

There are many more I'm sure.

By the numbers in that MT article the GS400 was a tenth slower in the quarter, and a tenth slower to 60, and .87 in the skidpad.....Close, but not quite. Close enough for comparison purposes though, but, can you find a 98 GS400 in decent running condition for under $10K? You can find Corvettes all day everyday.

I googled the IS350, and a brand new 2021 is rated a 5.7 0-60 and 14.2 in the 1/4....On par in the 1/4 and a tenth shy of the Vette in the 0-60....and that's a 2021.

Show me some numbers  >:D

Depends which articles you use.

I see the Vette at 6.6 to 60 in some....  .85 on the skidpad.

2006 IS350 was quicker than the later (heavier) cars.  The 306HP never changed.  https://www.motortrend.com/cars/lexus/is350/2006/2006-lexus-is350/

The point being....it's not impossible to find a $10K car that's on par.

I looked at a 2009 Subaru WRX STI for $9500.  That will obliterate the Vette, not just match it.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Oh, I don't give two shits, lol. Like I said, I have no interest in the performance of this car....it's just another fun toy to tinker with. If I want to go properly fast, I drive the XKR.

I (a) like pushing Ron's buttons today, and (b) I do think that the C4, in general, is great bargain basement performance.

Oh I think it's a great car, no doubt.

And a great bargain.

I just don't think it's the only car under $10K that's a performance bargain.

I think I'd rather be in that than a 90s Vette.  Or a 90s GM for that matter.   ;)  Was rough times for GM.

Bonus points for winter hoonery in the WRX though!!!

Down to the short list on this one now....Yesterday I pulled the targa top off and repainted the peeling trim on it with semi-gloss black as well as around the windshield frame, cleaned up some more under the hood, and detailed the door jambs. Today I finally broke out the DA, clay bar and polishes and got the paint cleaned up. It's not perfect paint, but it's definitely very presentable for a driver.

I ordered new exterior emblems to replace the current faded ones, I've got a really nice stitch-on leather steering wheel wrap to install in place of the garbage that's on there, and a few other small jobs to do - then a proper photo shoot!

I also took it for a good run through some local backroads the other day, really enjoyable car to toss around. Corvette owner waves are still a prominent thing too....

Thanks guys, I am liking this one too...

Where did you shoot the paint for the peeling trim?  Garage or driveway?  How did you guard against dust, etc?

The targa top itself I removed and shot it in the backyard, it was a windy day but the fencing and houses keep the wind down to a minimum back there. The windshield part I had no choice but to shoot in the driveway, but by that point in the day the wind was down and the sun was on the area in question, so the paint flashed pretty quick and I didn't have any issues with dirt sticking. I neglected to take 'before' shots, but I can get some after shots next time I get the car uncovered - it looks factory.

Wrapped up a handful of little things on this car and cleared the driveway for a little photoshoot followed by a nice drive with the targa off....It's kind of a bear to handle, especially compared to the smaller t-tops on the trans am, but it does feel more open without the "t" bar.

I've been driving the two (the Vette and the 85 Trans Am) recently and figured I'd share some thoughts on how two of GM's performance cars from the same year compare...I really like the L98 5.7L engine with it's TPI (Tuned Port Injection), instant starting and quicker response compared with the old 4bbl carb 5.0L in the Trans Am, as a result the Vette feels a little more modern; though starting in 87 you could get the L98 in the Trans Am (or Camaro) and there was a TPI equipped 5.0L available in 85+. They both use the same 700R4 transmission, but the Vette uses a different servo that makes the shifts a little firmer - it's nice when you're ripping on it, but a little annoying when you're just cruising.

Obviously the Vette has significantly more power (240hp I think) vs. the carbed 5.0L in the Trans Am (which I think was only rated for like 190hp), and it feels much faster. In the case of my two particular cars, the Vette is also much louder with the big Borla mufflers on it vs. the T/A's stock single muffler dual outlet system. Surprisingly though, despite better response from the Vette's fuel injection, the Trans Am's motor feels a little 'smoother' when you're cruising along.

Both cars are equipped with GM's factory performance/competition suspension (Z51 in the Vette and WS6 in the Trans Am). As a result both have quick ratio steering which makes the turn-in super sharp (can kinda catch you off guard). The Vette though is really setup for handling and won't even fuss at anything you can do (safely) on the road. The Trans Am gets sloppy by comparison, as expected. That said, the Z51 Vette is super harsh...so unless you're using it's capability regularly, I'd rather have the Trans Am's softer, more refined and relaxed ride quality.

Interior wise the Trans Am is shocking miles better....In the Vette, everything you touch feels cheap and flimsy. I do love the digital gauges, the seats are really comfortable (well padded and bolstered) and it has a few more features that the T/A lacks (power locks, power seats). I don't like how you need to unbolt the targa top vs. the Tran Am which has a simple latch. The Trans Am is much more spacious inside, but also feels better built, it's still 1980's GM, but it's sturdier and has better fit/finish than the Vette.

Bottom line, two very different cars despite sharing (sorta) drivetrains. The Vette would be better suited to the weekend warrior types; autocrossers, track-day guys, or the guys who wake up real early on Sunday morning to go ripping through the backroads. The Trans Am is a much better cruiser, softer, bit more refined, you can (and I have) easily roadtrip for days in the T/A and not be irritated, whereas the Vette I'd be done in 2-hours.

Anyway, one of my biggest motivations for doing this car was to get some photos with Firm Jr. and his (my old) C4 PowerWheels. That happened today and it was definitely all worth it.

The car itself cleaned up really well too, could probably use a little more detailing time in the engine bay, and I might do more on it later in the summer.
