Baby, you're much too fast (Oh, oh)

You guys know I am always keeping my eyes peeled for deals, the latest I grabbed was this 'little red Corvette'. It's an 85, so the first year of the L98 with TPI (tuned port injection), no crossfire injection here. This one has 188K on it, I haven't run all the RPOs yet, but it does have the (fairly desirable) Z51 suspension and the (less desirable) automatic. Beyond that, seems like a fairly typical C4. Not at all a car I was seeking out, but I have a hard time passing up on a good deal.

From what I can tell it's had one respray in the original GM bright red, they did a decent job and the paint still shines decently, with some love it'll really pop. I am a sucker for red interiors, so I dig the red on red. The seats are in shockingly good condition, but the carpet and the rest of the interior, in typical C4 fashion, is pretty roached. I suspect though that a good detailing and maybe some red carpet dye (any recos!?) will go a long way here.

It runs and drives very well....I debated driving it the 40km home, but with impeding rain I decided against it. I did put maybe 10km on it circling around the neighborhood and it's really tight. Steering and suspension feels really sharp, the old L98 runs smooth, idles great, and pulls a lot harder than you'd expect for a 35 year old Vette. Even the transmission still shifts nice.

The majority of what it needs is cosmetic, lots of cleaning, detailing, fixing up interior trim, stuff like that. It does have a couple of issues I need to resolve. The first being that the digital dash is intermittent, while driving it toggles between being really faint an unusable and then suddenly it'll be fine. The blower motor is non-op, and someone cut off the mufflers and just ran a couple of pipes to some incorrect (and ugly) rear tips. It's unbearably loud...and I feel highly conspicuous driving around in a bright red vette with this much noise coming out of it.

All I did today was get it home, pulled the digital dash cluster out of it, pulled the headliner board (need recovering) off the targa top and gave it a quick vacuum. I'd like to get the dash thing resolved soon, but other than that I'll back burner this until the MGA is done; I've also got a couple spring house projects that'll need to get done ahead of this.

OK, honestly, who got the Prince reference and knew what I bought before opening the thread??  :rofl2:

I realized I neglected to take any engine bay photos....sorry. Next time I am playing with it I will.

Cool!

I don't mind these in auto since the manual was just "meh".

Nice pick up!

Yeah, early C4's had the Doug Nash 4+3, long throws and a quirky system that can be difficult to work with. The 700R4 is a familiar friend, I am good with the auto in here too.

Most excellent. Will be over for a drive next weekend...

We should put on period-correct attire and slowly cruise around together in this and the 911SC, one behind the other...

Great find!  I still like the looks of these.

Can we get a pic of the dash lit up?

#jealous  O0 I'd like an early 90's one, cleaner looks and a bit more HP, and I'm sure plenty fast enough too.

I got the Little Red Corvette reference...and now I've got an earworm too...SOB!!  :banghead: :bang:

If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Looks minty on the outside, and I'm sure the inside will clean up just fine.

These have the fiberglass body panels glued to a steel frame? How does that hold up over time?

Looks great. I've always heard that '84 is the year to avoid but the most numerous so this is nice early example. The interior looks pretty decent in the photos.

Thanks guys, I am looking forward to playing with this one. I want to see how it compares to the 85 Trans Am, and I have some initial thoughts after spending a bit of time in the Vette, but I want to get some more seat time in the Vette (and get it up to my standards) before I make any judgements. One thing that surprised me right out of the gate vs. the T/A (or even my prior C3s) is that the targa top needs to be removed by unscrewing 4 big T40 torx bolts....Big PITA vs. the T/A which has a single release handle (lockable with the door key) on each T-top for removal.

Can we get a pic of the dash lit up?

Sure, but you'll have to wait until I fix it....

Looks minty on the outside, and I'm sure the inside will clean up just fine.

C3's were terrible for the fiberglass bodies looking great but the steel structure underneath totally rotting away...They were body on frame with a 'bird cage' that ran up the windshield pillars that was notorious for rot. The C4 was a huge departure from that; it sort of a semi-unibody (except the body panels themselves offer no structure) and it's made of aluminum and galvanized steel. They really thought about rust prevention and (IMO) were very successful. I don't think I've ever come across a 'rotten' C4, and I can't even find surface rust anywhere on the underside of this car (except for a few exhaust bits)

Wow.  Nice!

I really admire you for your ingenuity with these projects.

I have always found gauge clusters tricky to access without accidentally cracking or scratching the plastics.  You must have better hands than me.

Lol, I was 'gifted' with long skinny fingers and decades of constantly working on stuff like this means they're pretty good hands - unfortunately they've got the scars and calluses to prove it.  ::)
This particular gauge cluster was super easy though....Maybe like 8 screws to get the thing out and two connectors on the back with long enough leads that I was able to get my hand in and remove them pretty easy. Took me maybe 10-15 minutes to get it out. Infinitely better than early 3rd gen f-bodies with the mechanical speedo cable that has zero slack, or even later model GM stuff where you've gotta take all the lower dash panels and upper dash pad off to get to the cluster.
