You'd be surprised....This is the FIRST time I've ever played with anything like this, I was able to get some really good pin diagrams labelling the correct input for each, and there are a lot of youtube videos of guys working with this specific dash, without those two things I'd be beaten on this one. Patience is key though....There's no reason I couldn't have found this the issue yesterday when I had it plugged into the car, other than it was cold and windy so I was freezing and rushed, and that's no way to work on stuff like this.

Lol, sure. I actually took the time to mark all the connectors for my homemade harness and stored it away....never know when I'll need it again.

Nice work, must have been super satisfying seeing it light up as it should.
I love it when a plan comes together.

Nice repair job! Feels so damn good when we're able to fix something by ourselves  :) Reminds me of the soldering I did on my pool's salt chlorinator - saved 400$!

Thanks guys, and yeah, super satisfying.

The next annoying issue I have here is less specific to the car, but moreso to my disorganization. The headliner in the targa top needs to be redone, easy job. I even have some nice charcoal grey headliner material left over from the Camaro I did last summer.....Do you think I could find it!? Totally went through my basement, then through my garage, then the garage and storage tents at my grandmas...no sign of it. It's in like a 6ft long box, so it shouldn't be this difficult to find...There's a section of rafters in my home garage that I can't access with the cars in place, so hopefully when I take them out in a few weeks I'll find it up there.

My sentiments exactly, and when it's warm i just wanna do other fun stuff, so these type of repairs are better left to someone else in my case.  ;D

Nice work man!   :fiver:

Welp, plugged it into the car today and it's all working perfect - thank the Lord, lol. Literally spent the following 4 hours totally re-wiring the stereo....It was working, but only the rear speakers and the wiring was so dicey that I couldn't in good conscious leave it, so I basically re-did the entire thing and got the front speakers working. Kinda sucks to put that many hours into it, and the only improvement is that the front speakers now work....but it's another job off the list.

Found a cheap solution for the wheel/tire situation.

The rims on my car (an 85) are actually 86 rims....they're identical to the ones for an 85, but the 86 had non-painted centers and grey fins, whereas the 84 & 85 had black painted center and black fins....Not sure if my late production 85 just ended up with 86 rims at the factory, or if someone swapped at some point. The rims are 'ok', but I would need to be refinish the clear coat since it's pretty beat up (easy enough given the flat design here).

That said, I prefer the black centers/fins, plus it's correct for the year, and I needed tires, so I've been watching kijiji. Sure enough, a deal came up on a set of correct 85 rims, in really nice shape, with great tires (BFG G-Force Sport Comp-2, 2017 date codes, look like they've seen very few kms) in the correct 255/50/16 size, for far less than a decent set of new tires would've cost me. So I grabbed them. They're a bit dirty, but I cleaned up the first one and with about 45 minutes of effort (wash, compound, glaze and wax) they're looking more than good enough for this car.

I am tempted to strip the clear on the unpainted surface and polish the aluminum and then re-clear, it would be easy given the design of the wheel, but I don't think it's worth the effort given how well they cleaned up.

I'll scrap the tires currently on the car, and either keep the bare rims for some track rubber as noted earlier, or I could probably sell them to cover most of what I paid for these. Either way, it's a good deal.

On the way home from picking them up....Was able to squeeze the 4 wheels, 3 people and a tricycle in a Forester presser

I actually always hated these wheels, until I started learning about them. There was quite a bit of development that went into them, and the turbines are functional pulling air in to cool the brakes.
I also learned that the early C4s (84-87) used a different offset than the later cars, or the C5, so if you want to run late C4, C5 or 4th Gen F-body wheels on an early C4 you need spacers (1 or 1.5"), which put me off my initial idea of running a set of C5 wagon wheels.

Another small update here. Window sweeps were destroyed and that kinda stuff really makes a car look bad, for $100 I got two new ones from RockAuto. Since I already had the door panels off from the stereo wiring repairs it wasn't too bad of a job to replace them....Maybe 30 minutes a side. Then I lubed all the window and lock mechanisms and got the door panels (which I scrubbed earlier) back on. With the dash and door panels all cleaned up, and any missing hardware replaced, the interior is really starting to shape up.

I also got the power antenna working! Bad connection and it's working perfect now....Impressive because my experience with power antennas of this era has not been positive.

Before:

After:

Really nice to have door panels again:

Also, I finally remember to take an engine bay photo.....IMO, this is the coolest part of these. With the hood up you can see and access all the front suspension, and have almost complete access to the motor itself. Very race-car-esque.....Obviously it needs a serious detailing in here, I haven't touched it yet. There's also a really cool corvette badge that goes on the valve cover (where that little round glue spot it), it was loose and I pulled it off to repaint and reattach once everything's all cleaned up.
