Cool, I've always liked those.
I drove an '87 in an autocross once, it was like driving a big powerful Miata, quite easy and fun.

Can have issues with bad grounds, a friend chased those around for a while on his.

C3's were terrible for the fiberglass bodies looking great but the steel structure underneath totally rotting away...They were body on frame with a 'bird cage' that ran up the windshield pillars that was notorious for rot. The C4 was a huge departure from that; it sort of a semi-unibody (except the body panels themselves offer no structure) and it's made of aluminum and galvanized steel. They really thought about rust prevention and (IMO) were very successful. I don't think I've ever come across a 'rotten' C4, and I can't even find surface rust anywhere on the underside of this car (except for a few exhaust bits)

Thanks, was wondering about that. One of my cousins had an old LR Defender with aluminum doorskins on a steel structure and the steel part gave him a lot of grief

Galvanizing everything is a great answer

Funny how the spec was a 20 year old service life though!

Yeah, I am thinking my digi-dash issue is likely a ground, definitely a crux of building a car out of plastic...

It does drive significantly more 'go-kart' like that I expected. Especially with the Z51 suspension (which is known for this...and a harsh ride), turn in is VERY sharp and it corners damn near flat. Downside is it rides like a dump-truck.

Funny how the spec was a 20 year old service life though!

Yeah, I caught that too. I feel like most cars today are lucky to make it 20 years, and in the 80's I don't think a lot of the made it beyond 10 years. Today these early C4s are getting close to double that 20 year marker and interior materials aside, seem to be holding up very well.

All I did today was get it home, pulled the digital dash cluster out of it, pulled the headliner board (need recovering) off the targa top and gave it a quick vacuum. I'd like to get the dash thing resolved soon, but other than that I'll back burner this until the MGA is done; I've also got a couple spring house projects that'll need to get done ahead of this. l.

That is ALL you did?  :rofl2:

Love how you stack up cars for projects. Never leave this forum, please.

Looking forward to the progress on this one just like all your other projects.

OK, honestly, who got the Prince reference and knew what I bought before opening the thread??

I'm GenX, so all that was left to guess was the year! Great find ! Barnfinds featured a mint, late red C4 'vert manual selling in FL for something around 13k$. Past cross-fire and pre-new dash are the best of that generation.

I just realized; I think it was the first Need for Speed that had a C4 ZR1. That was cool.

I also had this game called Vette! for PC (1989). Was one of the first open world on the market.

You had a choice of regular, ZR-1, Callaway or Sledgehammer Corvette.

Congrats on the C4! Still one of my favorite generation of the Corvette and one of my all time favorite cars period. I think it's because as a young boy they were one of my dream cars. My 93 was black on red, I had a similar issue with the carpets (wear and discoloration). I bought a compete new rug from Ecklers for around $400. Well worth the $$. I tried dyes but they never looked right. Ugliest job I did on that car was fresh weatherstripping....not a nice job.

One thing I love about C4's is how great they look with a set of modern Vette wheels. I had C5 wheels (17" front and 18" rear) that completely transformed the car.

Was Test Drive really 1987? I remember the first time I got into the franchise around 1994... it was good. Grand Theft Auto usually always had a version of the Corvette too. The original two-dimensional GTA/GTA2 had a "Coquette", and GTA III/Vice City had a "Banshee".

I had that as well, for the Mac. It had most of San Francisco including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.

Thanks. I am actually going to try some dye on the carpet, I've never done it before so it'll be a fun learning experience. Duplicolor has an aerosol dye that came well recommended, so I am going to try that first. There's also RIT, which some people have mixed up in a spray bottle to dye carpet in the car, might be worth a shot if the aerosol doesn't work out....Given that C4 values are still very low (though climbing now) I don't want to be tossing $ at it if I can avoid it.

I do need to attend to some of the weather stripping, it looks pretty good around the targa top thankfully, but the outer window sweeps are trash as is the weather striping on the doors. It's available cheap on rockauto, and looks pretty annoying to replace (door panel needs to come off) but I'll deal with it.

I was never a fan of most C4 wheels, these early 'turbines' especially, but again, recently my tastes have kinda shifted and I find myself really liking these. I do LOVE the original C5 wagon wheels, and if I was going to change it up, that's what I'd do. However, the pre-88 C4's had a different offset, so to run post 88 Vette wheels on an early C4 you do need spacers, which is kind of a bummer.

Small update. I secured a pair of nice stainless steel performance mufflers, used off another C4, from kijiji for very little $. I'll polish them up and install them in the spring to take care of that obnoxious noise.

As for gaming, my earliest automotive gaming experience was 'death race' on PC...pretty epic, and it had a 3rd gen Camaro! I didn't really get into gaming until the late 90's though with NFS Hot Pursuit, it had the new C5 and I was smitten. To this day, a base C5 coupe in Artic White or Black on the silver painted wagon wheels remains one of my favorite Corvettes...and I'd have that over any C4. Though a late C4 in Polo green on tan with a 6-speed would be a close runner up. I lose interest in Corvette's almost entirely after the C5...

To reminisce a little more on Corvette stuff - and in particular red C4's. One of my earliest really vivid childhood memories from around 3-4 years old was going to Toys R Us with my parents to pick out a PowerWheels car (I was getting it for Christmas or a Birthday). They had 4 cars lined up; two Jeeps (red and pink), a grey off-road truck/Jeep, a dune buggy and a red C4 Corvette. I remember getting into each of them and play around to make my decision, and ultimately deciding on the C4 which became my most prized possession for years to come.

In fact, I still have it, it's got a little patina, but now that Firm Jr. is getting close to an age where he can use it, I am very excited to dig it out, upgrade it to a 12V system (a popular thing with these older Powerwheels) and let him enjoy ripping around in it. The photo op here with him and the Powerwheels and me with the full-sized example was too sweet to pass up, so it was definitely a factor in my decision to purchase this particular car.

This is the powerwheels from a few years ago when I moved it from my parents to my place.

I really like late C4 convertibles...and I have no idea why.

And if I was going C5 and it wasn't a Z06?  I'd go with a FRC. If I couldn't go FRC, I'd go regular C5 in Fairway Green.
