Free truck...
« on: February 16, 2021, 09:45:57 pm »
So late last year my old Chev truck collapsed at the landscapers when I had them drop gravel in the bed.  Truck bent right in half!  This was a shared family work truck, not a daily driver, so no urgency in replacing it.  With no one in the family needing a truck for a while thanks to winter being here, I haven't been looking for another truck.

My father's neighbour passed away early in the new year.  He was quite elderly and him and Dad were good friends.  He'd been spending winters in the southern US to escape our winters and drive down and back each year in his pick up.  He liked the drive, trying to take slightly different routes each time.  Over the years he's seen quite a bit of the US thanks to that.

The other day his son came to visit my Dad and handed him the keys to his father's pick up.  A ten year old Silverado 2500HD, but in fantastic shape thanks to winters away from snow.  He knew his father and my Dad were close friends and since the estate was pretty sizeable, the family agreed they could easily give the truck away to my Dad.

So, we have a "new" family work-truck.  It sure is nice, waaaaaay nicer than any replacement I would have bought.

That's a pretty great family to be able to agree to do that. Nice truck!

Wow, credit to that family, very nice thing to do for a neighbor and a great way to honor their Father. That's a good truck too, should last a lifetime with some care and maintenance.

Can't beat a free truck and a very generous family.  I hope you and your family get many years of trucking out of it.

Nice which model ?

6.0L gas LT.  Don't know much about these engines.  Drives pretty nice for a heavy duty truck, feels massive.  The hood is so high, visibility to the front in tight spaces is terrible.  Turning circle is unreal, these should only be sold on the prairies.  Not a spec of rust, not even a door ding.  175,000km.

Dude, it's relative.  If one is used to driving a smaller vehicle with a hood that slopes down, then stepping up to a big truck with a broad hood can be jarring.  If you've driven trucks for years, then you're obviously used to it.

Compared to the 1995 Chev half ton previously owned, this thing is basically a monster truck.  The hood has no down slope to it, the dash is high.  I'm tall, but the forward visibility is way worse compared to the old truck.  Will take getting used to.

Super cool Jay!  What a fantastic gift!!  I'm not 100% sure, but I do think those 6.0's are supposed to be a pretty solid bet.  Cheaper to maintain than a diesel no doubt.
Awesome it's got the full 4 doors and a real bed, not that 5 foot garbage.  So...time to buy a camper!!  ;D ;D

Only 1 in Mb that age...double the kms, looks like it might even be rusty...$18g asking.

You (AB) also drive a half ton.  Pretty sure the 3/4's hood might sit a little higher.  Plus it's a GM...first thing I noticed when I drove one around that style was how much higher the hood was than my Ford.  Felt like I was driving a building.  HTF you supposed to see around that thing!!  In time it'll feel like home though.  A mobile home, but a home nonetheless.  ;D

6.0L is a solid drivetrain.  Haven't put many miles on one since the mid 2000's but they were good even back then.  It'll be decent on fuel considering the size (just as good as my Tundra) but will be thirsty when working just like any gas pickup.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

That high hood seems to be the style now. The Surburban reminds me of an old time bathtub:

Prairies, humidity gets up to 2% maybe during rain.  Maybe.

Tahoe actually pictured. The "hoe" part of the name sounds like "haut" in French - translates to "high"  ;) When I drove to GM to pick up the Tahoe Z71, I was drving a 2014 Accent hatch. Had to reset my own positioning sensors  ;D

Congrats on the new family truck!
