Added an air-cooled...
« on: February 06, 2021, 10:43:42 pm »
When I was a kid, one of the super well-off kids at the local park used to have one of these:

And I was ETERNALLY jealous. An air-cooled 911 has been on my "must-have" list since forever, and many here know that about a decade ago, I passed on a '91 964 around $10,000-12,000 assuming that it'd be even cheaper down the road. Boy was I wrong.

Anyway, I followed a lead to a literal barn find, a "non-runner". Guy wasn't sure what was up with this 1979 911 SC, but he's the original owner and it's spent a bunch of its life serviced at Downtown Porsche. He stopped driving it a few years ago (plate expired 2018) and he wasn't sure why it wouldn't start.

I made him a SCARY low offer, almost insulting, and I walked when he turned it down. A month later he called me and I had a flatbed bring this puppy right to me. Deal's made, and I now own this. It needs seats, because he's replaced the original seats with some hideous yellow "racing" looking seats, and the targa top reupholstered. That's literally it.

Why wasn't it running? Battery was pooched. Put in a new battery and she runs like butter. Changed the oil, fluids, and there are no leaks that we can find, though I'm sure a couple will turn up.

I've sourced seats and should have them in this week, and the targa top should be done in a couple weeks as well. Car's being stored now, and I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it, but I really do want to enjoy it for a bit. I've dreamt about these things my whole life and I am pretty over the moon and emotional now that I actually have one.

I really did think the ship had completely sailed on me owning an air-cooled 911...

I'm going to have MANY questions here for the likes of Blur, Gurgie, Ron, etc...

But first, does anyone know what the circular button on the key does?

You lucky bastard!!

Round button on the key should light up a small bulb on the key so you can see the key-hole to unlock the car in the dark. Mine never worked on the 951, but you can get replacement for it, or even an LED bulb.

Well, it's a little early for someone to have the Win of the Year...but congrats, I believe you may have just done it!  Can't wait for some good summer photography (triplebob spec maybe?) and maybe even a giddy driving video??

Huge congratulations man.  I had a similar experience about 8 years ago, there was an Acura NSX just sitting on a Honda lot about 4 hours away, I think it was listed for $32k at the time but it had been there for months.  The timing wasn't right and I didn't pull the trigger, not even a year later the prices of them went through the roof and I could have almost doubled my investment.

Glad you were able to get one of your dream cars and lessen the regret of missing out on that one 10 years ago.

So what are some of the highlights of this car?  I'm not overly familiar with cars older than the 90's.

Good God well done sir. Not a Porsche man myself, but this one seems like one hell of a find.

Enjoy it to its best!

Very cool.

My keys don't have any buttons, they are just keys.
I'm fairly familiar with SCs,  so feel free to ask questions, but you're not getting my seats. ;D

Wow, super cool barn find man!!    One of the coolest cars I've even been inside.  Never driven one but sure felt right the couple of rides I was lucky to get in one.

Years ago, when i started making enough money to start investing, my step-father offered to introduce me to his guy.  I didn't give him an answer but I really wanted to find someone myself who i was comfortable dealing with.  Fast forward a month or so later to an event my wife and I were attending, and this guy shows up about the same time as us in a 911 Targa of that vintage.  I forget the model year but it was black, in really good condition, and sounded wonderful.  I got talking with him later about the car and during that conversation found out he's my step-father's investment guy:rofl2: The next week I was in his office signing papers.  Figured he was someone I could deal with.  ;D

Literally no back story. Followed a lead from a friend who knew this guy. No affiliation. I call this kind of thing a "Firm Special" usually...

No idea about the wanted ads... I've never used or responded to one!

I had an ad on Kijiji for years looking for 915 transmissions or parts for a 911.   Never a response.
