I CAN'T CHARGE AN EV AT MY CONDO SO THEY WILL FAIL.  Jesusfuckingchrist.  Today.  No one is saying that everyone will be driving an EV on Jan 1 2021.  But, its coming.  Takes time.  Horses were around for decades while cars were being introduced.  Stand on the TCH as it runs through the north end of Swift Current Sask and look at the town and you can walk to the other side of the city in about an hour, strolling.  Most of the city is detached houses with some apartment buildings south of the highway with outside parking.  The traffic on the highway is people driving through or farmers coming to town.  Most of the residents are just driving short distances in town, day in and out.  Right now, almost everyone could have an EV as a second vehicle and everyone could have a plug-in hybrid and probably use the ICE once a month, maybe.  A big trip for most people is the 275km to Saskatoon or the 250km to Regina.

it would be easy to solve the infrastructure issue in Speedy Creek.  An issue though would be money.  EVs and PHEVs need to get cheaper as people can't afford them.  There's a lot of used Cavaliers and 20yr old pick ups around not because people love them, but because they can't afford better.
Jay you need to calm you puss* down LOL

If I'd bought a 2005 Ford GT when they could be had for $150K I'd be waaaaaaay ahead as they're north of $350K now.  For almost everyone, purchase price is as important as overall long term costs.  Teslas hold their value pretty well now (at the least the lower priced ones do) but that could change overnight thanks to the volatility of the EV market.  A technological shift could render them all cheap junk no one wants.  $50K+ is a lot for most people to risk, period.

What will really push the charging infrastructure forward will be $20-25K PHEVs.  PHEVs are things everyone can live with now even if they have a non-electrified cabin in the woods that they park at for years at -100C.

I woke up and checked, my car has 384 km of range this morning (I don't charge to 100% daily very often which is 410km).
How much range is in your car now, right now.

620 kms. Do I win a prize?

But aren't you saying that people live in less dense areas with remote cabins without electricity and that's why EVs are going to fail?  People in those small cities are among some of the most resistant to EVs and yet most of them could easily live with one, hence my using that as an example.  Dense urban populations would be easy to add infrastructure to in terms of technology.  It would take money, is all.

Nice 1000 km at 10L/100 km is $100 in fuel, enjoy spending.
We've spent $1200 in electricity in the past 90000 km.
I guess you'd be OK driving 12000 km for the same price.
Someone has to get rich, might as well be the oil barons!

Wow, people around here might not like me for calling out their racism and other bulllshitt, but holyfuckballs are you ever annoying.  I might be profane and blunt but this condescension is next level.  I'm a huge EV fan, wish I could afford one, but reality is reality.  And don't start in on me with a bunch of operating cost posts and other garbage, the upfront purchase price is out reach.  And no, I can't live with an old Leaf with almost no range.

Whatever man. I fill up once a month. Don’t look at what I spend and don’t care. Love my vehicle and I love not having range anxiety especially in the winter when I go skiing. I can make it from Kitchener to tremblant on a half tank in the dead of winter with a family of 4. 0 hassle.

YMMV but of course we all know your position.

When range improves I’ll be happy to get electric for our family vehicle.

Obviously you just don't get it do you. You should have spent $100K+ on a Model S so that you could have saved money of fuel.  :P

I mean....you spent $80-$100 grand to save what, $1000, $2000 a year?

LOL this is likely the dumbest payback calculation I have ever heard of...

You are lucky you aren’t in one of the US states that are already charging the EV road fee, wait till it gets to Canada!

Averaging $550/mo for 5.5 years inc fuel, maintenance and depreciation on our Model S.
My Smart ED is $200/mo.

My point : woke up with 384 km, just like every day for 5.5 years, no time spent to gas up, and closing in on $10K saved on fuel.

Says he fills once per month.
So he has 1000 km range one day in 30 and less than half that half of the month, those are the facts he posted.
I have 384 km every single day of the 30 days in the month, averaging at the same range he has on average.

operating cost posts and other garbage, the upfront purchase price is out reach.  And no, I can't live with an old Leaf with almost no range.

We're in the Mach-e thread my friend.
Starting price for that non-Tesla EV is a rounding error near $60K CAD.

If you want to drive electric, a used Chevy Volt for $12K is a good buy, solid reliability, decades of battery longevity judging by owner surveys, and unlimited range with gas refueling.  Highly recommended.

Meanwhile, premium long range EV's like the Ford Mustang Mach-e will reign over the next few years, and will be available on the used market in 5 years time for around mid-$20's.

I posted a $37K Tesla Model 3 in the other thread, with warranty, and decades of battery longevity judging by third party monitoring over tens of thousands of cars.

Cars like the Mach-e are in sub-luxury price/capability : massive touch screens, OTA updates, excellent performance and handling, all wheel drive optionally, all glass roof.  These aren't Corolla's bub.

FFS a new Corolla with the trimmings is well over $27K.   Time marches on.   I paid $17K for my Smart Electric in 2013 taxes in with rebate.  THAT was a cheap commuter, I got $9K on trade in after 4 years, total was under $200/mo taxes, fuel, maintenance, tires.  It is possible to drive electric on the cheap, I've done it and continue to do so today, my 2018 Smart ED is fun to drive, short range but perfect for my commute (when I wasn't working from home).

1.1 Kwh in 23 minutes? My home charger is faster than that. Those are designed to be used while you shop or sleep or something

Yeah. To be fair I’m embellishing a little. I think it’s about 660km to tremblant and I was just under a half tank with a family of four, a ski box, and packed to the brim.

I think the mileage is probably closer to 900km based on what I read but it would be a fun experiment to see. If I didn’t have my family I would have tried to make it home.

But yea I do love it. Way more than I thought.
How big is the tank? I was pushing close to 1100km per tank with my JGC diesel out of 93L

Reminder: The Prius Prime has a 3.3kW onboard charger, so Ron was lucky the EVSE not being supply @ 208V, it would have been lower by +/- 13% (208/240: 0,87) than 1.18kWh / 21 mins  ::)

No one should wait on L2 (level 2 EVSE), it is a destination slow recharge by design, anyway.
