Wow, a manual. Wasn’t expecting that.

I thought I’d read somewhere that the MK8 R would be DSG only, everywhere.

Well considering 40% of the buyers of the MK7 Golf R chose the manual I think it's a good idea to keep it available.

I think it looks pretty good.  The subtle changes they made over the Mk8 (which I am luke warm on) make it look a lot more aggressive. That colour of blue helps too.

You think I'd let the manual disappear?  ;)

Canada also gets that big bi-level wing in the photos. Only thing really missing for us, at least for now, is the Akropovic exhaust.

I like it!! But I've always had a soft spot for VW products despite never owning one myself.

I miss my VW. I know they make me swear at them with my wrenches but still like them.

I miss my VW. I know they make me swear at then with my wrenches but still like them.

Me too although I am not thrilled with they way they have been turning into the German Chevrolet over the past few years. I preferred it when their product was, in general terms, still a small jump up on the mainstream. Or at least that's how I felt.

Alas, I get it. Just saying.

I did lots of wrenching on them but I never had powertrain issues.  Replaced lots of front strut mount but that might have been related on the way i drove in my 20s :rofl2:

I also think the looks are good, not a car I would consider for myself, but I understand people getting it  ;)

I hate the headlights, they remind me of the hideous 2001 BMW 7-Series.

Finally...

One of the only options is a large "rail-to-rail" sunroof, which is being offered on the Golf R for the first time ever in Canada.

They're not great but I think I could live with them

As always, I think the GTI looks better. Will be interesting to see how the two compare and what the price delta will be.

The cost cutting on the Mk8 is kind of annoying. Not that it fundamentally changes the car but they've got rid of the hood struts and the A-pillar metal is now exposed where previously it was covered by a trim piece. I know that's little stuff in the grand scheme of things but it definitely cheapens the car.

Yeah I was a bit disappointed when my GLI didn't have the hood struts.  Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but VW's used to do all the little things to make their vehicles stand out a bit.  I'm guessing they are still recovering from the fallout of the Dieselgate scandal.  We should just be thankful they still make fun affordable cars.

Agreed. And it isn't just VW. These small cars just don't have significant margins and they're doing what they can to cut costs. Mini has been doing the same thing, simplifying the options menu and removing little features like the hidden second glovebox.

Unfortunately automakers seem to make all their money off of CUV/SUV/Truck sales so these compact cars get the short ends of the stick.

Blame emissions, safety regulations, etc...
It’s getting harder and harder to make a cheap car with some margin....
