Got a puncture - repair/replace?
« on: November 01, 2020, 01:23:38 pm »
Caught a screw this morning...

What do you fine folks think I should do: plug it using a repair kit, bring it to a repair shop for "proper" repair (inspecting the inside, installing plug+patch, etc.), or is it too close to sidewall/shoulder to be repaired?

Where did you purchase the tires? Sometimes there are a road hazard warranty with purchase to cover these mishaps.

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

^^ this.

unfortunately, i think that puncture is too close to the sidewall...they typically go by 1 inch or first row of treads...since the screw is in the first row (i think they consider that part of the sidewall), it's likely not repairable...in your photo, it would typically need to be in that middle 3 rows of treads.

I agree, looks patchable to me.  I had a screw a lot closer to the sidewall than this and the Goodyear store had no qualms patching it.  Get it repaired at a tire shop.

not from what i've seen online...repairs can only be done on the tread section (middle section)...not on the shoulder or sidewall.

Yeah, that’s the right way. Lots of places don’t care and will do it anyway.

I’ve been surprised a couple of times when I had the dealer repair a flat because it was convenient. Happened twice, once at VW and once at GM. Instead of doing the proper dismount/inspect/plug & patch from the inside, they just stuck a plug in and called it good. I could have done that myself, FFS.  ::)

i mean, if you need a temp fix to get you to payday or back home, i get it...but from what i've found online, it should be replaced...depending on the vehicle it's on and how much wear is on the tire (vs new), you may need to change more than one tire.

I'd stick a plug in it myself and be done.

All this talk about "sticking it in" and "plugs"...where's Scaerio?  His ears must have perked up :rofl2:

Thanks for the replies. I decided not to plug it myself and took to a local shop where they took it off the rim, patched and plugged for $40.
