The only good looking vehicle in their line up is this one.

Have to agree, but doesn't that just look like a modern interpretation of an older VW Golf?

More like the 1980 Civic.

You may be right but I don't remember those.  Did they outsell the Golf/Rabbit of that time?

You must be a Young Fella. :P
Not that young, I just turned 40, but I only started to pay attention to cars in the 90s.

^^ There you go, about the same age as that car.  You probably wouldn't remember, unfortunately they rusted quite quickly especially on the East Coast.

I had a 78 Civic. The car came with bias ply tires. When they were worn out I splurged and bought radials. Man I'm old.  :-\ :'(

I'm finding this thread to be a sad commentary on automotive design over the past 40 years. It underscores how Japanese designers, at least Toyota and Honda, go from one extreme to the other, after enduring design failures.

I don't see it as "design failures", just changing and/or updating...maybe even taking chances with the styling.  And people will complain either way...too boring...to extreme...too whatever.  For fans of Japanese cars, they seem perfectly fine with the designs...as evidenced by the massive sales figures.

If you don't like Japanese styling you can always go to the most boring styled cars in the world...VW.

Ouch.  But that Arteon is beautiful.

The Arteon?  OH!!  You mean the Fat Jetta?    :rofl2:

But yes, it's pretty decent for a VW.  They make a nice one once in awhile and go outside their comfort zone.

But I'm speaking in generalities of course.  MOST of their designs are snooze inducing.

So if a Civic or Accord is much too risque for you, you can rest easy with a Golf or Jetta for example.    :rofl2:

I thought you liked Hyundai's?

Well, I own one Hyundai and one Honda. What's your point- other than the one on the top of your head?

So did they actually get smaller or what?

On radials, they certainly were not perfected right away. Remember Dad putting an early set on (Michelin too) and have them all disintegrate fairly quickly

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being general "I puke every time I see it" and 1 being "I could be a passenger only if there were tinted windows" where would this one fall for you?

Based on (that rather odd) scale, I'd say it's a 2.  And admittedly, I am coming around a but after looking at it more.

Most of it is fine.  It's just the nose in the photo of the white car I don't like.  And the rear looks like a Jetta, so while a derivative of every other car out there, it's fine.

Mazda and Kia seem to have the best designs in this segment.

As for VW, yeah they are pretty bland.  But I think the Mk7 Golf Wagon is a good looking car that will age well.

Ouch.  I was kidding because a lot of people think the Civic looks like a Hyundai.

 :P

Should have added one of these before

  I don't think this Civic looks very Hyundai - they've gone rather the opposite routs with ultra conservative styling. Few would describe the Elantra as ultra conservative. And I'm not a fan of the new sedan look for Hyundai.  Don't hate it, but don't love it either.  Kia is kicking their butt when it comes to exterior design.  If the new Civic looked more like a Kia, I'd probably like it better.  ;D

I'm thinking this may be one of those cars where the colour makes all the difference in how the nose looks.

Here's an article with a picture of the luxury version, in a different colour than white or orange that previous pics of Civics have been. I didn't like the front before, but this looks good to me. Like what a Camry would look like if it grew up.  :P  Like the wheels too.

CVT, 2.0 NA and 1.5T. It's grown up in terms of both, interior and especially exterior design IMO.

Sounds about right.  Any idea if the hatchback will be around in the next generation?

Already out testing, with the usual camouflage.
