Quad questions

So looking at getting a quad, thinking of a Honda. Its gonna be used, somewhere about $5k. Should I even consider the Polaris or Cam Am stuff??

You'll be able to pass a Honda down to your kids......like anvils.

Yamaha's are pretty bullet proof too.

What are you using it for?
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

^^ I hope he says hunting or checking the fence on his acreage.

If it’s just for fun, then just say no. Friends don’t let friends ride quads.  :P

Get a dirt bike.  :)

I've ridden enough ATVs (and more recently SxS) to say they can be fun.  My dirbike buddies always had one of each..or more.  Sure, I prefer dirtbikes.  But I wouldn't poo-poo anyone for wanting to get out on the trails (especially the magnificent MI trails) in an ATV.  Especially here where there's ATV club riding areas where dirtbikes are banned.

Also, a modded 400cc 2 stroke Banshee ATV is VERY fun!   ;D

I'm assuming Fob that you're just going to use this thing for some light trail riding with friends?  If that's the case, I would look for a creampuff with low kms and that's been well maintained (old guy that doesn't have any interest in getting it dirty).  The maintenance part can be tough to determine but you can get a good sense by talking to the owner.  I don't know enough about them the comment on what makes/years are to be avoided.  Stay away from anything with a snorkel kit, rad relocate, etc.  Look for stock tires  ;D.  Unless that's the type of riding you're looking for.

On a side note, my FIL has a buddy with an outfitting company.  The abuse his quads go through is crazy.  He's had every brand, and keeps going back to Honda.  Yamaha is a preferred second.  However, you won't be putting your machine through anything like he does I don't think.

Trail riding/offroading type thing. I thought about dirtbikes and I'm not going to start doing backflips and heel clickers at this juncture so 4 wheels and lockers for the win.

The Honda’s nice if you get it with shaft - maybe they all are. I’ve pulled cats and poo’s out of several derbies and my slowass Foreman 500 has never left us stranded. A newer Foreman 450 has more power than mine - by 10 hp I think and is FI. If you want speed don’t get a Honda. Like rrocket said though you can hand a Honda down. If you had kids that is.  Get an illegal to use for passengers up seat so you can carry shi# and you do want aftermarket mud tires. The stock ones you can’t even clear a set of railway tracks. And they’re crap in mud.

Oh and my kids friend bought a can am. Fast as hell. In the shop with broken parts more often than I’ve been stuck in the mud. Pretty sure my kid had to tow him home at least once too.

Yep...Honda Foreman is an anvil.

If I couldn't get my hands on one of those, I've seen Yamahas (Grizzly, Wolverine) with a bazillion KMs on them too.

Father in law has a grizzly passed down from his outfitter friend. Had 13,500 km on it before he did the piston/rings. That was about 5 years ago and it’s still runs great. Not sure on the km now.

Yep...I've seen them with unreasonably high kms on them too!

I’ve never towed a Yami out of anywhere. Perhaps their ATVs are like their sleds. Underrated but built good.

I’ve been working with forestry companies for the past month. Most every pickup has a quad in the back, and so far they’ve all been Hondas.

Saw a new truck and quad today, and the quad was green instead of red. Took a closer look, and yup, it was still a Honda.

Read into that what you will, but I imagine it’s hard to go wrong with a Honda. Of course, these are purely working machines, so I imagine fun-factor is not even a consideration. Also interesting that many of them have a rollover stick thing on the back.

^^ GM regular cab, regular box. Mostly 1/2 tons, but also the odd 3/4 ton. Everyone grumbles about them, just because there’s no room inside.

Seems petty to make someone cram themselves and all their gear and maybe their dog into a regular cab, but I guess they’re a lot cheaper than even an extended cab.  ::)

I had  one regular cab, it was a Pain in the ass
Extended cabs are ok for one or 2 people
