TH: 718 Cayman GT4 vs Boxster Spyder

Wow.  They ditched the 4-cylinder, and went with a naturally aspirated flat-six.  That revs to 8000rpm!!!!

With a manual.

Has its problems though, namely tall gearing.  But still,  if I had the money, one of these would be the car I'd get (probably the Boxster, because convertible).

Some people think that Porsche mess with the gearing of the Cayman and Boxster so that they don't get faster than the equivalent 911.

The Cayman and Boxster GTS come with the same NA 6 cylinder and that's probably be where my money would be spent.  It's a little more luxury as opposed to pure sports car that the GT4 and Spyder are.

That's a good point.  If it has the same drivetrain, then I'm game for the GTS over the Spyder.  The draw for me the is naturally aspirated flat-six that revs to 8000rpm.  Save the buzzy little turbo-4's for the commuter cars.

Let me tell you, that little turbo-4, while not a classic flat six sound, is not buzzy, and is fast...very fast...probably faster than either the GT4 or Spyder...at least the GTS version (the old one).

But yeah, if I had the $$$ the Spyder would be it, simply gorgeous. I know the new GTS Boxter is essentially the same, but, for some reason, those Spyder humps, wheels, and stance is breathtaking.
I love it when a plan comes together.

The faster they make these cars the more interested I am in the older "slower" models.

I agree, there is nothing like a Porsche flat 6....if I'm buying a Porsche, I want the proper experience.
Lighten up Francis.....

Yeah.. i love the droptop experience, so Spyder please.
Is it worth 3x the price of an MX-5??  Hmmm...
The tall gearing would be a shock for me since i'm basically at redline at 30 km/h in 1st gear with the MX-5

They're just detuned a bit in the GTS models and you save nearly $20k I think.

Totally agree on that part...really the only reason i would want one
About to sign on the dotted line for a pretty major house reno that will cost more than the tag on either of these cars... so no Spyder for me   :P

I'd have to sell a few of my tanks at the brewery to afford one, so no Spyder for me either.   ;D

"The reason I've never bought one, is because I don't have the money."

 :rofl2:

So what's this, $115K with maybe an additional $10K in options? For that sort of money I think I'd get an Evora Sport 410, or an Exige if I could find one. Lots of pros and cons when it comes to build quality, handling, specialness, practicality etc. YMMV

It's interesting when you step from a good car into a Cayman/Boxster and feel like you were in a boat before, there is still an element of that when you go from a Cayman/Boxster into an Exige. The Lotus feels truly like a race car for the road. Now some people might not want that level of involvement on a day to day basis, there is no relaxing. The Evora is the more relaxing choice.

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

I'd associate dentists with 911s, not Caymans.  :P

My dentist always has a 2010-ish Audi S4 parked in the lot.  I always assumed it was the dentist's car, because, well, Audi S4.  I asked him about it one day, and he said, No, it's not his, the S4 belongs to one of his hygienists.  My dentist apparently dailies an early 2000's GM truck.

Whenever this argument is posed, I get a mental block and all I can think of is "kit car".
