9 year old tires ...should I replace them?
« on: June 18, 2020, 01:21:19 am »
I have some 9 year old goodyear all season tires on my 2007 torrent. There is some cracking on the side walls...2 tires are worse than the other two.

I dont know much about tires but I have read 6 years is when you should get new tires. Some sites say absolutely at 10 years.

The treads are 7/32nds and 4/32nds. I am not too concerned about the treads moreso about the age and the cracking on the outside side walls.

Any advice would be grea

if they are cracking, they are past their best before date...replace them ASAP.

New tire time was some time ago.  Do not wait.

I think you are all wrong. They should toss them and get new tires right away.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but you need to replace them.

Seriously though, I wouldn't wish a tire blow out on anyone.

its only surface crack, and you still got treads on them.  increasing tire pressure to 60 psi and drive carefully, you will definitely get another 4 years out of them.
haven't you never seen classic cars running around with 20 year old tires?

.
i'm kidding, if it's cracking, get some new tires.

i hear hercules tires provide smooth no bump rides.

I've driven on older tires without much worry, it's the addition of the cracking that makes it not worth taking a chance.

Did you get the dates off the tire serial?  Could you see if the first characters are 4B?

I had both boat trailer tires blow out on me the first year I bought it on the way home at the end of the year.  Tires looked new, no cracking, still had a nice clean black appearance.  They were seven years old if they were original to the trailer.  Might have initially thought it was due to a road hazard but they didn't go at the same time.

I had 10 year old tires on the Sonata before I replaced them.  However, I had my tire store inspect them at 9 years and they gave me the okay to use them one more season.  The previous owner garaged the car for all the years she owned it and that likely contributed to their longevity.

Hijacking this thread, the Michelin P185/65/R15 on my SW2 shows multiple cracks on sidewall and are due to their age. I knew that before I put it in hibernation. My bad.

My Options are

A) Do nothing and wait until a disaster happens (nah, not really)

B) I still have in my basement another set of all season mounted on steel rims from previous 1995 Saturn SW1, those Michelin are dated 2701 27th week (2001) but being P195/60R14, circumference is 5.4 % smaller than 15" on SW2 ... and they will need hubcaps. I guess the % error is too big ?

C) I'm tempted by Yokohama Avid Ascend GT P185/65R15, 88H, 740-A-A, 12/32" thread, 110,000 kms https://tire.yokohama.ca/public/img/tires/146/bulletin_en.pdf

I'm looking for "touring" tires to match the SW2 character: good grip either dry or wet, silent on highway and long thread life. They will be only 3 season use, I have a complete set of Michelin X-ice 3 on another 15" but (rusty) rims set if ever I would need to run with next winter.

Any experience / comment about these Yokohama Avid Ascend GT ? I have read good comments about them online, pricing seem reasonable too..

Thanks

ps: For good figure, I added a picture of my first Saturn SW1 (SOHC) bought new as a demo in 1995, colour was green forest, the extra 14" rim/tire set came from that one.

grab some General Tire RT43 (assuming they come in your size)...long tread life, decent performance, fair price.

I checked online with a local supplier, price differential is negligible ($6/ea lower). I would read more closely the specs. Thanks for suggestion.

RT43 seem to be (on Tirerack) rated just under a bit the Yoko but a 3rd one could be Michelin Defender T-H.

I was focusing too much on the 5.4% error between the 14" and 15", I just realized these 14" are 19 years old, not 9 years (as the thread name I'm borrowing), my minds thought based on 01 code date (2001), we are not in 2010 anymore... I'm getting old  :-\

So, either go cheap on Kijjiji or the Yokohama Avid Ascent GT or Michelin Defender...

i didn't mean to go RT43 instead of the yokos (they are good tires as well)...just giving a recommendation on alternatives if you wanted some...sometimes, it's hard to find some tire brands due to limited availability (dealers), so having a few options is always good.
