Two New Vehicles
« on: June 13, 2020, 11:10:04 pm »
I'm super fortunate to have managed to pick up two new bikes this week.  So I sold the FZ09 last November, and I also traded in the Honda CRF250L, and replaced them both with a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, and a KTM 300 XC-W TPI.

So bye bye this:

And this:

And hello KTM!

This is a 2 stroke, so is wicked fast, but really light! I nearly bought a Beta but Ron convinced me otherwise.

And Hello Triumph!

It's such a great bike, still learning all the various electronics, but it's so good on dirt roads!

Great choice on the replacements!

Good move to go hard core on the dirt side with the KTM, and the Triumph kind of splits the difference between the CRF and the FZ09. Got all the bases covered there.

On those tires, I bet the Triumph is even plenty of fun on the pavement.

A. How was that FZ09?  I've got 8 yrs on you...am I officially too old?  :o :P

B. How's the Tiger in comparison? Slower, sure...but overall?  Gotta be a totally different riding experience.  Or not enough time on it yet I suppose.  Are Brit bikes at least better than Brit cars?

C. Damn...your pics ALWAYS look so feckin' nice.  Too bad Chaos wasn't nearby...anything you seem to take pictures of could sell without the obligatory YouTube vids.  You've got a gift for sure.

Congrats on the new bikes!  I was just wondering about your kids the other day, so it's nice to see a pic of your son.

Thanks! Yes these tires are sort of 60/40 off/on, but they are also pretty hard wearing, so I should get 1-2 years out of them at least, maybe more as I'm splitting miles between bikes. They actually feel pretty good on the road too, and yesterday I was doing 80+ on dirt with no issues at all. They are very confidence inspiring.

Front is a Continental TKC80, rear is a Mitas E07+. Now I've got the bug to go exploring all the dirt roads near me.  ;D

Thanks for the comments guys, yeah I decided to take the good camera with me.  :rofl2:

The FZ-09 was really, really good. I had done a few mods such as a full ECU flash, exhaust, custom suspension etc. So it was pretty much perfect, I was very sorry to see it go. I still think it's one of the best engines I've ever heard/ridden. BUT it was a pure hooligan bike, and I'm getting older and slower ha ha, more aware of my own mortality. I get more thrills testing myself off-road than I do weaving between people looking at their phones.

The Tiger is for a different purpose. It's slower, more comfortable, quieter etc. but it's incredibly capable off-road as well as on. It actually sounds way better than I expected, as the firing order makes it sound like a twin rather than a triple, so it has more character than the regular 'whirring' Triumph triples.  It has: 888cc, 94hp, 64lbft torque, tubeless tires (which was a change over the Tiger 800), Showa adjustable suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes which are phenomenal, ABS and cornering ABS, Traction control, 7" TFT screen, and six riding modes that help switch stuff on and off for riding off road, rain etc. Last night I was using off-road (not off-road pro) which allows for a little bit of slip before reining you in with it's safety net, immense fun! (Pro turns all the electronics off)

It weighs about 450lbs, which is about 50lbs heavier than the FZ, which isn't too bad. It is high though so slow maneuvering takes some getting used to. It also has one of the best quickshifters (both up and down), which I haven't used yet as I'm still running it in.

So yes it's way different from the FZ, but I needed a change, and I love being out in the wilderness and being able to explore more.

This review got me hooked on the previous gen bike:

And the new 900 is even better again.

This won't be a garage queen, I'm quite sure I'm going to be dropping it a lot ha ha! (More protection going on soon) But it will stay with me for a good few years.

Real good garage!

Definitely explore every dirt road you can!  I'd explore dirt roads, get somewhat lost (or turned around) and find my way home. Definitely worse ways to spend an afternoon! I even had a word for these rides.."meander". No destination...no timeline. Just meander.

Did it on some dirt/gravel roads out your way in my 911 too!  Probably one of my favorite drives in my 911 if I'm honest...and it would have been better on a bike!

Awesome!  A couple of nice units for sure.

Did you look at the KTM 790 Adventure Rally?  I got a short ride on a Yamaha 700 Tenere and it was good. Will need to suss out one of these Triumphs.
