Dkaz's yet another prolonged tow vehicle buying adventure
« on: May 31, 2020, 02:23:37 pm »
EDIT: Not getting the Ranger anymore, but this will be a 1 to 12 month discussion on my next tow vehicle.

I'm sort of contemplating buying a 2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew XLT FX4 asking $40,740 all fees included, plus tax ($7,000 off MSRP) which includes every piece of technology imaginable including dual zone auto climate control, auto headlamps with auto high beam, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, collision/pedestrian detection, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, terrain management, electronic locking differential in the FX4 package, and so much more. I test drove it in a 75/25 mix of city/highway and averaged 10.5 L/100km. An additional 3 payments on Ford promotion further knocks that price down to $38,990, this promotion ends tomorrow. It has a chrome package which I’m not a huge fan of but I don’t hate it either.

I also did look at a 2020 F-150 SuperCrew XLT with the N/A 3.3L V6 asking $46,248 ($3,200 off MSRP).  Sure it's bigger and more comfortable but just has no features in comparison, just auto headlamps with auto high beam and Apple Carplay/Android Auto. Test driving it on the same course averaged 12.5 L/100km. The 3 payments on Ford promotion knocks that down to $43,998.

So obviously I like the Ranger more. It has a 1,650 lb payload and 7,500 lb towing capacity so it'll handle my trailer a lot better than my old Sequoia could, yet is super good on gas when I'm just commuting with it. They further knocked off an additional $560 to get it down to $38,430. Invoice is $43,479 according CarCostCanada, and then these are incentives they could've used:

Delivery Allowance - See dealer for details. $3,50030/06/2020
Auto Show Bonus(See Other Incentives & Notes) - See dealer for details. $75030/06/2020
Close That Deal Certificate - See dealer for details. $75030/06/2020

Which brings it down to $38,479, so even after incentives it's still below invoice. Some things I would want is nano-ceramic coating and spray in bed liner if I can negotiate that in.

What's prompting this is part of me is coming to the realization that no matter how good of a motorcycle rider I become, sometimes we are unexpectedly at the mercy of the drivers around us. The video I saw of a guy on his bike waiting at a stop light when a truck came in diagonally at a good speed and pinned him against the truck in front of him. How do you even look for that? So maybe I should be a normal adult, mitigate risks to my life so I can stick around long enough to see my kids to adulthood, and think about going back to two wheels after that. It's not like I do a lot of riding just because these days anyway.

The other part of me thinks I'm fine on my scooter, I know many riders who have safely done a quarter million to a million km each on two wheels. Me, 60,000 km and counting. Just rent a UHaul when we need to tow the trailer, a crew cab pickup from Enterprise Truck Rental if we go on a longer trip.

Decisions.

Definitely a decent deal on that Ranger.  For a few bucks you can get the dealer to do a Ford performance tune an add something like 50 up and still keep the warranty.  I think I'd be asking for that to be thrown in.

Not sure you will get much support in retiring from you 2 wheel transport to a pickup truck.

Ranger has been fairly reliable so far, from what I understand. Hopefully they have the turbo 4 issues worked out. My brother has that engine in a Mustang and so far it has been good

Know what you mean on the motorcycle, I rode for decades with no issue and then a deer jumping out at the wrong time just about killed me

That's a big jump in vehicle though from a $600 Matrix, which will protect you almost as well as far as cages go

Impressive payload. Not sure I would tow your trailer long distance with a Ranger though. Living in Kelowna this is a smart purchase as the Ranger will allow you to explore the back roads more. Buy a cheap boat or canoe and the world is your oyster. One thing to consider is if this is your primary vehicle how do the kids fit in the back row? They grow quick.

You guys are supposed to discourage me dammit! Fiscal responsibility! We only buy used previously depreciated vehicles! What is this, a forum of enablers?

I was just about to say by something used....

You want to take a break from riding (you'll be back BTW), no need to spend $40k....

i dont think its a good deal its a 2019 and we are in 06-2020 so its already 1.5years old and you are only getting 7000 off
at the MRSP nobody pays it so you are maybe saving like 2 to 3 thousand for a 2019  :o

Describe this "you'll be back BTW" in a meme or animated GIF...  :rofl2:

Yea no one pays MSRP but they won't go -0.5% invoice on a 2020 either. I calculated I save about $3,000-3,500 vs. a 2020, taking out the chrome package I don't really care for. Still a decent savings. There's no $10-20k on the hood on midsize trucks like there are on full size trucks.

I appreciate the vote against a new truck though.

Sounds like a good deal on the Ranger!

F150s are in short supply right now, hence the lack of good deals.

I like the chrome but not the DI, turbo engine idea. If you lease it won't matter obviously.

You're going to be towing at your maximum with that truck, and you'll probably be over once you've loaded your family and all the luggage into the small truck.  While max-load towing is fine for short trips, it's definitely not something I would recommend doing on longer trips, especially if you're going into the mountains.  You're going to be white knuckling it the entire time, and it just won't be an enjoyable experience at all.  That trailer of yours will definitely push a Ranger around quite a lot.

My opinion would be to get a nicely loaded, 2-4 year old half ton truck of whatever make you want.  Maybe get an F-150 with the 2.7EB.  It should be enough engine to pull your trailer, but more importantly, the truck itself weighs more than a Ranger, and just has higher all around capacities.  It will just be a more comfortable experience when towing your trailer.  The 2.7EB gets pretty good fuel economy when you're not pulling a trailer.

The only older midsize pickup that has the tow rating and payload is Dakota with the V8 and 3.55 or better axle ratios, and they're either asking $8,000+ or are beat up like crap.

My other option is getting an 02-06 GMC/Chevy/Caddy truck or SUV. I'm either going to spend <$4,000 and keep dailying my two wheelers or go full nuclear and buy a <$40,000 truck that's exactly what I want to drive everyday and ditch two wheeling. There's no in between.

You definitely want and need the truck so why try and talk you out. Think about getting to the camp site in style and comfort.
What fiscal responsibility? The world is going to :censor: so might as well enjoy every minute.
Just buy it and see you in the show and shine.

1) It would be a more interesting thread

2) Going halfway ($20k) could put some really nice vehicles on the menu and the other $20k buys lots of gas (or whatever).

Just food for thought

I just spent nearly 1000 km this weekend in a rental V6 2020 Colorado Z-71, made me REALLY want a small truck. That 302 HP V6 averaged 9.4L/100KM through the mountains. I'd like to try a Ranger next, I'd say go for it!

I guess another question is, if you are going to spend 40 grand, why not get a Tacoma?

If you decide a truck is not for you, likely you will be taking a bath getting out of the Ranger

This. 2020 has a power drivers seat now. Plus resale.
