EDIT: Not getting the Ranger anymore, but this will be a 1 to 12 month discussion on my next tow vehicle.
I'm sort of contemplating buying a 2019 Ford Ranger SuperCrew XLT FX4 asking $40,740 all fees included, plus tax ($7,000 off MSRP) which includes every piece of technology imaginable including dual zone auto climate control, auto headlamps with auto high beam, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, collision/pedestrian detection, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, terrain management, electronic locking differential in the FX4 package, and so much more. I test drove it in a 75/25 mix of city/highway and averaged 10.5 L/100km. An additional 3 payments on Ford promotion further knocks that price down to $38,990, this promotion ends tomorrow. It has a chrome package which I’m not a huge fan of but I don’t hate it either.
I also did look at a 2020 F-150 SuperCrew XLT with the N/A 3.3L V6 asking $46,248 ($3,200 off MSRP). Sure it's bigger and more comfortable but just has no features in comparison, just auto headlamps with auto high beam and Apple Carplay/Android Auto. Test driving it on the same course averaged 12.5 L/100km. The 3 payments on Ford promotion knocks that down to $43,998.
So obviously I like the Ranger more. It has a 1,650 lb payload and 7,500 lb towing capacity so it'll handle my trailer a lot better than my old Sequoia could, yet is super good on gas when I'm just commuting with it. They further knocked off an additional $560 to get it down to $38,430. Invoice is $43,479 according CarCostCanada, and then these are incentives they could've used:
Delivery Allowance - See dealer for details. $3,50030/06/2020
Auto Show Bonus(See Other Incentives & Notes) - See dealer for details. $75030/06/2020
Close That Deal Certificate - See dealer for details. $75030/06/2020
Which brings it down to $38,479, so even after incentives it's still below invoice. Some things I would want is nano-ceramic coating and spray in bed liner if I can negotiate that in.
What's prompting this is part of me is coming to the realization that no matter how good of a motorcycle rider I become, sometimes we are unexpectedly at the mercy of the drivers around us. The video I saw of a guy on his bike waiting at a stop light when a truck came in diagonally at a good speed and pinned him against the truck in front of him. How do you even look for that? So maybe I should be a normal adult, mitigate risks to my life so I can stick around long enough to see my kids to adulthood, and think about going back to two wheels after that. It's not like I do a lot of riding just because these days anyway.
The other part of me thinks I'm fine on my scooter, I know many riders who have safely done a quarter million to a million km each on two wheels. Me, 60,000 km and counting. Just rent a UHaul when we need to tow the trailer, a crew cab pickup from Enterprise Truck Rental if we go on a longer trip.
Decisions.
