Tire Pressure Issue
« on: May 13, 2020, 09:34:42 am »
2020 Crv EX 10K miles. Two weeks ago, the Tpms light kicked on along with the "tire pressures low" warning. I checked the drivers front tire and psi was low. Brought it to a local tire shop, who said they found a small hole and patched it. Next day.. Light comes back on. Psi was at about 29, filled all the tires, ran calibration. Repeat cycle for a couple of days. Had the local Honda dealer look at it while there for an oil change. They say they can't find anything wrong with the tire except "feathering", replace it or go back to tire shop that patched it. Tire shop when I went back said the driver rear tire bubbled on inspection, and they patched that. With that low of mileage, no viseable damage to the wheel, no recent memory of hitting a pothole/road object.. Is it likely a defective tire issue or a wheel issue.. It's needing air on a daily basis.

Could it be the same tire? Dealers like to rotate the wheels so it's possible it ended up in the back. In any case, if by "bubbling" you mean it leaks air through a puncture then have it fixed and stop driving on road shoulders  :P

Typically there would be a nail or a screw in the tire as well, otherwise foul play is a possibility.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Hi, the tires weren't rotated, as they patched the front one two weeks ago. They said they found a small hole in it. I don't have a lot of experience with this. If it was a wheel issue vs tire, what signs would indicate that?

If it's a wheel issue which would be extremely rare on a new car, then for instance there could be a leak between the wheel rim and the tire itself, due to a possible wheel defect, but like I said, it's unlikely in case of a new car. Besides that, there can be pothole damage to the outer or inner rim of the wheel and that is usually apparent right away as you will see it bent. If your tire place said it was a puncture then it's what it was, I'd ask them if they found a nail or something in the tire.

Also check with soapy water if it bubbles in or around the nipple stem.

I wonder what the "bubbling" is in this case?  Usually it indicated a leak between layers, often from an impact or perhaps from an assembly problem.
Or, re-reading that, do you mean they did a soapy water test to determine where the leak was?

If you ran over something like a board with a nail sticking out of it then it's entirely possible it punctured both front and rear tires on the driver's side.

Did the tire shop remove the tire to patch it, or did they just plug it?

I wouldn’t be worrying about defective tires or wheels just yet.

More likely that you ran over something, got a few small punctures and the shop didn’t do a thorough job so missed one of them.

^ Agree.  If you're adding air daily after the repair, take it back to the shop and let them fix it.

^^ this is most likely it...it's possible they found one and said "there it is"...fixed it and got you on your way...there may be more than one though.

Thanks. I made an appointment at the tire shop for them to look at it again.

It's also possible the leak is THROUGH the alloy wheels - very hard to detect.

Used to be horrible through magnesium wheels.  Painting the surface of the rim could fix it.

In this case though if that's true, should be warranty.

Get a large Rubbermaid bin. Fill with water. Take wheel off vehicle and immerse tire/wheel standing up in water. Slowly rotate wheel around until you see bubbling. Circle area with grease pencil and take to tire place. I have had to do this a couple times when the tire dealer "couldn't find a leak." Couldn't? or couldn't be bothered?  ;D

Spray bottle with soapy water works good, too.

At the very least you'll get a clean shiny tyre for smooth no bump ride  ;D

Yes except if it is coming through the actual wheel. Start with the spray bottle and move to the bin if the leak is tricky?
