Will these new rims and tires fit?
« on: April 24, 2020, 07:15:09 pm »
Hi all. I'm pretty new to the whole topic of custom rims/tires but have been reading up on it and learning. Though was hoping someone could confirm that what I understand is correct.

Currently, I have a 2013 Honda Civic:
Tire size: 195/65/R15 (what I have now).
Rim size: 6Jx15 ET45.

What I'm thinking of switching out to:
Rims (already bought as was very cheap): 8Jx18 ET50.
Tires (have a good deal for as well): 225/40/ZR18.

Looking at tiresize.com/calculator/, this means that the diameter for the tire only increases by 3mm and the width by 20mm.
And looking at willtheyfit.com, it says that the new wheel will have an inner rim which is 30.4mm closer to the suspension strut. The speed reading change isn't significant either.

Based on what I've read, a tire diameter increase of 20mm should be okay, correct? And the 30.4mm should be fine as well? Just trying to get a good idea of A) will these all fit correctly, and B) is it a bad idea to go this big when considering my car and all that?

Any help in making sure my assumptions are all correct would be appreciated!

New wheels will probably clear fenders but may be too close to suspension. Try one front rim on and see what happens...

You will feel every crack on the road, the car will be slower in a straight line acceleration and will burn more fuel. But it will look good while doing all that, if the wheels fit at all  :P

Post some pics before and after.  I'll be surprised if they fit.

i doubt that car was designed to wear wheels/tires that large...because of that, it will likely ride like crap...lots of unsprung weight and the narrow side wall means you'll feel every bump, manhole cover, etc...i mean, if they do fit, and you're 18 and think it looks cool, go for it...but it will negatively affect the ride quality of the car.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestion and advice, it really helps. Based on what everyone is saying it does seem like a bad idea from a practical perspective. As much I want to make it work, it doesn't seem worth it. I'll just cut my losses and sell those rims, should be able to to at least make my money back.

Thanks again!

If you already have them why not just try one to see if it fits? I have 8" wide wheels on my civic as well, slightly lower offset (+45 vs your +50) and have no rubbing issues.

Well I only have the rims currently. I'd have to go out an buy the tires, so a bit of a gamble there. Even then, since most opinions seem to be about concerns with comfort, it doesn't seem worth it.

The 2013 Civic Si could be equipped with 215/40R18 from the factory.

Pretty sure the suspension geomety doesn't change from your base model to the SI.  You should be fine.

Really though, you should be asking a Honda Civic specific forum.  Guaranteed a bunch of those Civic enthusiasts have tried every wheel and tire combination known to man, and they will know exactly what fits and what doesn't.

I recommend www.9thgencivic.com

They even have a specific thread here: https://www.9thgencivic.com/threads/all-wheel-tire-fitment-offset-thread.8953/

He will be closer to the suspension than the listed 18"x 7.5" rims, because of the offset difference and the rim width too, but it's not impossible the rims would fit, that's why I said 'try one rim in front'

Here's a comparison with the stock 18" option mentioned above:
